I recently had a new motherboard installed on my Dell Inspiron 8600 (by local repair guy - not Dell). I'm doing a clean install of xp pro and downloading the drivers from the Dell website. I entered my service code to get all the right drivers, but one of the downloads is System Bios A14 (optional). Should I download and install that or not?![]()

Unless it fixes something that you need (for example, adding Windows 7 compatibility), it's not necessary to flash your BIOS. That being said, I always update my BIOS when a new version is available.

It's not necessary, but often tiny changes in the BIOS can have large positive impacts on the way your system responds; even things that you might not think would do so.
I've never had a Dell BIOS update go wrong; but just make sure that your battery is in and you are plugged into the AC power before starting it. Quite a few laptops wont allow you to do the BIOS update unless this is the case, but not sure about your particular model. -
So then maybe I should upgrade the Bios. That always scares me -- this laptop is old and apparently a conservative! does it make a difference that the motherboard is different than the original factory installed one? ...and since I just fell of the turnip truck yesterday, I have no clue what Windows 7 is. Is it yet another Windows OS post-Vista?

The only thing you need to be wary of is that the BIOS update you are downloading is compatible with your motherboard. If Dell has recently updated your motherboard, I would check with their technical support for which BIOS update to apply. If they can't help then it's not going to hurt if you don't update it.
Windows 7 is a new operating system post Vista. The release candidate is available for free download until early August, but will only work until sometime in 2010 (forget when), at which point it will start turning your machine off every 2 hours. However, the retail edition is going on sale in October this year. Take a look in this forum for more information if you'd like:

Thanks but I believe I'll hold off on Windows 7 for now!
As I mentioned, I have a new motherboard that was installed by someone local - not Dell, and although it's apparently compatible, I don't know what kind it is or anything! Think I'll just leave that Bios thing alone for now - Guess I can always update that later if need be.
Thanks for the help!!
