Hello to all. I am Rahul from Hyderabad, India. I purchased a Dell Studio 1558 in March 2010 with the following configuration:
Intel Core i5 M430
2*2GB RAM
640GB HDD
ATI Mobility Radeon HD5470
Windows 7 Home Premium
Dell 1520 Half Mini WLAN
Dell 365 Bluetooth
15.6" HD 1366x768 WLED Display
DVD RW
Backlit Keyboard
5.1 Audio
bla bla bla![]()
The reason i bought this laptop was love at first sight. I became fond of this laptop the day i saw it online for the first time. Soon i made up my mind and picked it up for 48500 INR. Many of my friends were jealous that i bought a Dell Studio. It was a big deal back then coz 48500 INR is a big amount for we Indians. The laptop worked just fine. It had killer looks and design (subjective), good processing power, ample space to store my music, movies etc and a graphics card which worked fine for most of the games at playable resolution and fps.
After a few months the laptop started giving trouble. First the speakers got distorted. Then the DVD RW stopped writing discs. Got both of them replaced. Finally the Motherboard & Hard disk started overheating and gave up within an year. I quickly got them both replaced along with the heat sink. I again had to get the parts replaced in less than 6 months. Fortunately i had opted for extension of warranty. Blame it on the refurbishing team of Dell or whoever concerned, the parts just kept failing regularly over the next 1 year. There was logistics error, failing parts, poor tech support and i was totally fed up! I started searching online and found this forum with veteran and sound members. I thought of making my Studio 1558 the Ultimate Studio 1558 like a member here has done.Sorry i cannot recollect his name,
Over the next few days i made calls to Dell tech support inquiring about various parts which can be upgraded. I happened to get a feedback call from one of the managers. I explained him about the state of my laptop who happened to escalate it on high priority.
I spoke to the Dell Escalation Team and they went through my history, understood my case and immediately gave me an RMA though my laptop is more than 2 years old! Cool enough for a laptop which is older than 2 years and considering the fact that they dont do RMA for laptops older than 1 year.

But here comes the tricky part. Couple of days back i got a call from the Replacement Team of Dell. Now that Dell Studio line has been phased out they gave me the following options:
The 1st option seems good to me coz Dell XPS 15 of similar configuration as mine starts at over 60000 INR here in India. Iam not bothered about the Pink color coz i can replace the Lid with Anodized Silver: the standard Dell XPS color by buying it on ebay or from Dell directly. They are not revealing the exact specification/configuration of the laptop. They want an email from me which states that i have agreed upon the replacement with XPS 15 after which they will give me the exact configuration. If i dont like it i don't have the option to change my mind.
- Replacement with a Dell XPS 15 L502X of 'similar configuration' but of "PINK"
Color.
- Get a Credit Note of 48500 INR which can be used to buy any other Dell laptop/product of same or higher value by paying the difference amt.
- Get a Refund of 48500 INR. But I am not really sure of this coz it was mentioned only once in 3 of my conversations. In will confirm this in a few days.
- Replacement with a refurbished Studio 1558.

The 2nd option is not really viable for me coz the options for me are Inspiron and XPS. The new Inspiron 15R is of similar price range and comes with 3rd gen Core i5 processor etc etc. But i dont like its looks! The Dell XPS 15 range starts at 60000 INR and the Dell XPS 15z which is an upgrade to Dell XPS 15 starts at 70000 INR which is quite expensive.
The 3rd option if available is good too. I was thinking of making up some money and going for Samsung Series 7 Gamer or ASUS ROG G series laptops.
The 4th option: No way!I would be happier with the laptop which i already have.
What do you guys suggest? I am a student and i require mobility: cannot opt for a desktop. The laptop should perform good and be reliable. It should be an entertainment laptop and should live long. I play games at Full HD resolution by connecting it to my LED TV. I usually keep my laptop on continuously for days. I put it on a desk with a cooling pad on all the time.![]()
Kindly help!
Thanks & Regards.

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
If you like the 502, there's no reason not to go with that option. If the spec isn't to your liking, I'm sure they will try to work something out - you could also sell the 502 and buy one of the other machines on your shortlist.
