I have an Inspiron 8100 and have enjoyed it very much. One feature I have always enjoyed was the keyboard which is very easy to type on effortlessly. I bought it used and the person who sold it to me said he had replaced the keyboard so it had been replaced when I received it. Im wondering if he used a Dell keyboard or some other, possibly, better replacement because, when I go to the Dell store and test drive the new machines they dont type as easy as this one. The keys appear to have a metal spring type or lever mechanism underneath.
Does anyone know if the Inspiron 8100 keyboards were better than those produced now or is it possible to get an off brand that is better as a replacement?

The keyboards that are on the laptops now are the newer keyboards. I'm not sure what keyboard the 8100 had, but you can call Dell's Spare Parts ( 800-372-3355) or look around online at Ebay or other vendors. Dell Spare Parts should have the 8100 keyboard available for purchase.
AFAIK, you can not use another keyboard. You have to use the same model that is availble for your laptop. -
Do the newer keyboards still use a metal lever mechanism? Is anyone familiar with the older keyboards or whether they ever used this kind of mechanism. I'm trying to find out if the keyboard on my 8100 is same as OEM or was an upgrade. Thanks!
