Hello all,
Was wondering if I could convince somebody, anybody, to help me get my Dell Inspiron 6000 notebook to boot up and stay unfrozen long enough for me to retrieve my files, and put them on my tower pc.
In a nutshell, I got this Inspiron about 3 years ago- I currently have it connected to an external monitor, because my wife dropped a heavy object on the screen last year, and destroyed said screen.
Just this past week, I turned it on, and it started getting really slow. Finally, it got to a point where now, when I turn it on, it boots up, it goes to the desktop, the desktop icons all appear, and within a minute or two, it just kind of slows down, and eventually freezes up, and the hard drive indicator light quits doing anything. It does not respond to anything, and the only way to restart it, is to hold the power button down until it resets.
If anybody knows of a thread already on this site, regarding this problem, please point me in the right direction, as I tried the search function, and did not come up with anything.
Oh, and one or two other things, since it initially started having problems, sometimes, I will get two "missing module" error boxes pop up- and also, while it is booting, the screen flashes black for about 3 seconds, and then comes back on and continues to load.
Thank you very much to anybody who could possibly help me out of this jam. I really do not plan on using this laptop (or notebook) anymore, if and hopefully when, I get my files off of it.
And that is the other problem, I can not attempt to boot up in safe mode, as my screen is busted up, and it will not output to my external monitor, when I hit the f key while it is starting. I did make a couple different bootable cds, but they do not seem to do anything.

You should get an enclosure and hook it up to your desktop to retrieve the files. You might have better success if you make sure the drive is cool before hooking it up such as put it in the freezer for 30-45 minutes before trying data recovery.

If I were you, I could purchase an external enclosure like this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817349004
Then, you can simply remove the hard drive from the inspiron, put it in that enclosure, then hook it up to another computer and copy the data off.
EDIT: Beaten. However, don't put it in the freezer. This can destroy your drive more than help it. If you have important data on the drive and the enclosure does not work for you, seek professional assistance in retrieving your data. The condensation that forms on the platters of the drive when it is removed from the freezer can cause serious head damage. If you have the means, reading all the data off the drive while it's in the freezer IS a solution - not many people have the means to do this though. -
On a side note I love these enclosures, hooked an old one up to my 1737 e-Sata transfered like 16GB of data in a couple minutes.
and with a sata 2 3GB/sec speeds and laptop hard drives being so thin its like unlimited storage. -
Concur with what's already been said. As to your original problem, it sounds like it could be a virus problem. But you just want to get your data off.

Thanks very much guys- I will start by getting an enclosure, as you guys have suggested. Is the enclosure that Hep! linked to, the right one for my laptop?
Again, thank you for your replies.
