I wouldn't get anything you can add later in your order. Batteries can be bought off eBay or when they have accessories sales. RAM can be added from Crucial for 60% of the cost. Even the HDD can be upgraded, but it's more of a pain. Just get the display, processor and vid card you want.

I agree with Brian. However, I suggest ordering the 60 GB 7200 RPM with your order. This will give your system a nice boost.

If you play games, get the ATI 9600 128 MB video card. This is the most important selection you can make if you want to play games.

Some people like the UXGA screen but I think the fonts are way to small....I really like the SXGA+ screen. A nice balance.

Buy the minimum RAM offered, and upgrade the RAM from another vendor, you will save a ton of money.

I am upgrading the memory from 512MB Sodimm to 1,024 with Kingston for $64.99, I also have a 80GB hard drive, but really Dell says the XPS is for gaming not the 8600. You'll get your moneys worth out if you put it out. Having a set amount limits you to the point you might not be happy a year from now. I put the Intel smithville project and code name sonoma for you all to see what's is in the offing for 2005 it's almost November 2004. It's your bed and you will have to sleep in it even if your not satisfied with the limited amount you want to spend.

9200 is huge...not really a "lap"top. Also, I really hope that the screen isn't a 17in. xga...coz that would totally suck. Get the 8600 with at least sxga+ resolution. I got the wuxga res. and am completely satisfied. I have perfect vision and I must say that the fonts aren't nearly as small as some posts would lead one to believe. The only annoyance is that when viewing most videos in full-screen mode, pixelation occurs due to the high resolution. Of course, the beauty of this thing is that you can be doing work and having a movie running BEAUTIFULLY in a decent-sized window. =) 128mb radeon 9600 is also a must...other than that, feel free to go wild. I believe that the 1.6 is your best bet, since the 2.0 is like an extra $500. Also, skip the HD and RAM upgrades...they can usually be had for less than what dell charges if you shop around and have the patience to wait for sales. I got my 1.6ghz, ati128mb, wuxga dell for $1400...the cash I saved will go towards a nice hard drive and some ram. good luck!

It has a WUXGA now, so that's not a problem anymore. Plus, its only a $100 upgrade.
