To start out, I am almost computer illiterate, but I can work through some of the problems....I own a dell 1525 with the vista home premium, i have owned this machine since 2008 ( yes i know that it is quite old). the pc recently decided not to start up anymore, so since i didnt really have any information worth keeping on it, I thought I would try a complete re-install with the Dell CD..... during re-install it obviously erased everything on the pc, but now i cannot get past step 1 in the reinstall and it sends me to the blue screen of death.....

i repaired several laptops in my life and that sounds likely as a hardware issue..........why ??? because this issues points in that direction.

probably the motherboard (which it usually is) or the video card (which is permanently soldered on the motherboard on this laptops....so you need a new motherboard anyway)

you have two ways.............buy a "new" motherboard from Ebay (and replace the old one) or buy a new laptop.
OBS.....if you going to buy a new motherboard, you really need to call DELL and ask then which PART NUMBER you have. (there is different part numbers out there regarding how old your model is)

If you can get into the Windows setup process, I think it's less likely a bad motherboard than a bad drive or memory...

Hmm...I own a few 1525 and 1526 and those are still working. I think your problem is more related to your hard drive and or bad memory. If you board was bad you wouldn't get a boot or working power on to start with. And my Dell motherboard are still original just dusted and rethermal pasted and CPU upgraded to T8100 for intel and AMD still the same. But the problem seems to indicate either the hard drive is bad or memory is not working as Commander Wolf is indicating. I would change memory as that is easier then hard drive and then switch hard drive to see which one is causing the problem.
