Any 2.5" SATA drive will work, including the two you linked.

Cool thanks, yea Ive had models in the past that had some odd enclosures and so, which is why I was checking, so you think that newegg one is good? Looks good but I dont normally buy them.

Sad story I got hit with a Virtu virus, when I did the restore disk, after it uploaded the setup files, next I know the HD is making noises.. =/ So guess time to upgrade that old 5400 rpm 80 gb hd to something I REALLY can run ubuntu and winxp on. =)

Btw any good laptop externals I could use to maybe see if I can read the OLD hd? Some sorta external sata enclosure that youd recommend? That or good repair services to fix my hd?

Nothing wrong with either drives. Your choice really, a little more speed or a little less noise and power. If your old drive isn't completely dead, you can get a SATA/USB adapter and just copy all your files off of it. They're fairly cheap and abundant too.

Well Ive tried 5400 rpm for gaming, it works ok, but lil extra speed is nice, and Im a fast and furious web browsing tech girl so its not uncommon for me to have um.. 30-50 firefox tabs open, so yea even in Ubuntu I need that extra speed. ^^ Not to mention when I file transfer between hard drives heh.

Just kinda sad.. I knew I should booted into ubuntu 1st vs just trying to install windows 1st and backed things up.. sigh.. hoping the sata cable will work, Ill order that tm since today just spend 100$ for rush processing, next day shipping on that HD. 16 MB cache is rather nice for a 7200 RPM. =D So a big upgrade from my 5400 RPM OEM from Dell.

    Mysticales,

If you wish some more powerful and yet quiet hd I would suggest you getting 2.5" SATA2 Seagate Momentus 7200.4 series device (7200 rpm with 16Mb cache). I've done so recently and really see positive results from this upgrade.

I went with the WD 360 GB, 7200 RPM 16 MB cache, which according to reviews. For what I dom, large files, instense gaming, MMOs, this should REALLY speed things up for me. (Oh Yea Sims =p ) Seagates I have had bad exp with, always crashed out and to my friends. WD hasnt failed me (yet and please dont) lol.

30 GB for ubuntu now sounds nice. =D rest for windows, I should be able to install all my games now hehe.

Cant wait to get home, got that sata cable and hd overnight shipped hehe.

    Hi,
I hope you don't mind me piggybacking on your thread, but I was thinking of getting a new HD for my E1705. I was planning on doing a clean install for Win7 anyway, so this would be the perfect time. My current 80GB drive is just killing me because it's so small. But I have no idea what kind I should buy. The one I have now is

Disk Drives ST910021AS ATA Device 93.15Gb

    Please help!
    Thanks

Like I said, any 2.5" SATA drive will work (and your current drive is 100GB, not 80GB). If you want tons of space, there are 500GB notebook drives available for under $100. If you want speed, you can get a 64GB to 80GB Indilinx or Intel SSD for $200 to $250.

Alright, thanks. Are they difficult to install? Or do you just pop the old one out and the new one in?

I keep thinking of mine as 80GB because it's partitioned, and I really only have about 75-80 GB of real, usable space. But once all my movies, music and pictures are accounted for, I only have about 15GB of usable space.

Hey Corr, Ok your setup would be similar to mine. Order the Western Digital I did, was 1st link or use the product code in the newegg search. Im using its quiet, smooth and lotta space. The only thing I had to do was unscrew the HD enclosure from the old one. (Its that black tab thing that makes it match the rest of your laptops casing) Then I put that back on the new one. So far its working great. =) 1st thing I did was repartition it before installing XP MCE.

Btw for my old HD anyone know if I can open it and maybe fix the spindle or see whats causing it to clank on me?

At least for the 9400/E1705, the hard drive is not difficult to replace...

So yeah, you just pop it out, pop it in and you're good to go.
