Looks like atheros is highly recommended but I'm not sure if I have to be concerned about compatibility (meaning if drivers will be an issue)

It isn't so much a driver issue as it is a BIOS issue. Manufacturers such as HP and Dell often write BIOS code that blacklists any non-approved wireless card models; meaning that the machine will refuse to boot up if it detects any non-approved WLAN card.

I would recommend you start your search by looking for people who have done wireless upgrades on their Dell 1501s in order to find which cards work and which ones do not. Take a look at Intel cards as well, as they have lower power consumption.

Hmm not good. How do I know what I can use then besides the options Dell has on their site? I'd like to avoid using their branded cards. I've searched online but not really seeing people using alternatives

Get an Intel WiFi mini-card. They're very good, and not Dell branded. You can get the 5100 (2 antenna) or 5300 (3 antenna) for around $20 on eBay.
