    Hi,

I own a Dell Studio 15 and I'm having problems with it. It doesn't power off. Instead of giving shutdown from Vista, I simply closed the screen of the laptop and after a few minutes when I opened it again, the screen is dead. I still see the power button with white light glowing steadily. But the system is not responding whatever keys I press. The monitor is completely blank. Please help me solve this problem.

    Thanks,
    Babu

When you closed the lid while the machine was still powered on, it went into "sleep" mode. Some laptops have difficulties waking back up or they take several minutes to do so.

If the problem hasn't already self-corrected, be sure to press a few keys and the mouse buttons to try one more time to wake it. Give it at least 60 seconds after you do that. If that doesn't work, press and HOLD the power button until you hear it click off. Let it sit for at least 15 seconds or so, then power it back on.

It should start back up normally, though you may see a screen saying Windows wasn't exited properly or something to that effect. Simply hit enter when you see this message for it to boot into the Vista desktop.

    Hope this works for you.

Thanks a lot for your reply! Pressing a few keys or the mouse buttons didn't work for me. I had to resort to pressing and holding the power button. Is this an inherent problem with Dell laptops ? I bought the Dell Studio only 2 days ago. I had Toshiba Protege earlier and I didn't face any sort of problems with waking up. Is there any way to rectify this problem with my Dell laptop?

The Studio 15 have this problem sometimes, and I'm not free of this. However, I noticed that if I wait long enough (90 sec) the system will come back like if nothing happened.

Just try to wait long enough and post back with some news ;)

Mine has an issue where it takes a long time to go into sleep mode. I rarely use either sleep or shutdown so it doesn't really bother me. I would give it sufficient time to shutdown before closing the lid as that activates sleep. Have you looked at the Vista guide for the tweak that makes it shutdown more quickly? There is a process hanging that is causing the OS to wait for it before it shuts down.

I can confirm this computer has problems "waking up" after sleeping. It's more pronounced when I just walk away from it as opposed to closing the lid.
I had to go somewhere all of the sudden so I left the computer open. Well it put itself to sleep and wouldn't boot back up. I usually just do a hard shut down instead of waiting for it to wake up. But I had 5 pages of a 6 page research paper that I had forgot to save. It took longer than 5 minutes to reboot, but it did...

I found that updating to the latest bios update help solve this problem. When I first got my dell studio last week, I noticed it wouldn't wake up from sleep. After installing the new bios everythign works great.
    I have a Studio 1537
