Would a netbook be a good replacement for a damaged Inspiron 1300? I'd be going from a 14.1" monitor to a 12" or less. All I would be doing is web surfing and email. Or should I consider the Inspiron 1525 instead with it's 15.4" monitor? Is anyone having trouble tonight typing out posts on this site because I certainly am. I also had trouble login into this site. Everything seems to be very sluggish tonight, not smooth as usual.

In general, most netbooks these days are going to be less powerful than the 1300 (with the possible exception dual-core atom machines). If you're just going to be accessing the Internet, this honestly should not be a problem.
The 1300 is actually a 15 inch machine, so if you're comfortable with the form factor, the 1525 might be a better upgrade. It's generally just as inexpensive as most netbooks too. If you prefer a form factor downgrade, at that point you may want to consider a netbook.
If this is your main machine, I wouldn't advise getting a netbook; I personally don't think it's very pleasant to look at such a small screen and type on such a small keyboard for an extended period of time. There are 12" netbooks that may provide a more pleasant long-term experience, but these generally tend to be more expensive.
Else, NBR seems to be fine for me tonight. -

And it'd seem like something's wrong on your end... maybe you have a runaway process or something; check your CPU usage and the like.
In general people looking for a second machine are the ones buying the netbooks. My roomate last year had a desktop in our dorm and he bought an EEE 4G to take to class. I'm sure people buying netbooks to use a main machine isn't unheard of; it just comes down to whether or not you can stand to use it for extended periods of time. -
