I just got a 1525 for my wife and sometimes it won't shut down? The "Shutting Down" comes up but just sticks while spinning... Then it will go into restart without me pushing anything and say "windows didn't shut down properly" and ask me if i want to start windows normally, safe mode, etc...

    What is causing this?

    it's running vista home premium...

    Thanks

By new, I'm assuming you just got it.

Have you tried the factory restore?

It could be a billion things depending on what software you are running, if you have done any updates etc.

Have you gotten all of your windows updates?

not sure what all she's done - hasn't added any software though -

It doesn't do it every time either, just most of the time ;-)

    Hi jmgilliam,

I have a 1520 with XP and the same thing happened to me. They got the tech guy out to my house with a new motherboard and then the computer wouldn't shut down......got on the phone again with tech support after hours of not getting anything resolved and finally got them to send me a replacement new laptop. I suggest you do the same.

    Hi jmgilliam,

I have the exact same problem!! I bought a laptop for my wife and it's not shuting down properly.

    - This is our second laptop (one was made in China, this one in Malasia)

    - Our order is a custom one (We upgraded the ram to 2GB and got a 7200RPM HDD)

    - On the first laptop I tried reloading windows, updading the bios, installing updates and even calling Dell tech support.

    - Dell suggested installing 2 updated drivers (Video \ Chipset) I had already done this but, I wasn't using the ones from their site. When I did it appeared to fix the problem. ... But it didn't, not long after it started happening again.

    - I played played with the power management options (in windows and bios) ... no luck.

    - We have been installing the Windows update, and it seems to be linked to the problem. It's realy hard to say because it doesn't happen all the time.

    - I want to mention that I have Office 2007 installed. It's a long shot but, if you do too ....

    - Try putting your laptop to sleep, does it reboot? ours does.

I'm trying to pin point the problem. Do you see any other similarity with your laptop?

I've had this issue before with my notebook as well and fixed it. My problem was that the USB devices attached to the computer were keeping it awake. Unplug everything from your laptop (minus your charger, if you are using it before shutting down.) If that works, you can try plugging them in one at a time to see which one stops the shutdown process.

Saw a post earlier today in the forums......

Worked for me on a 1520, but I did download a whole bunch of vista updates too.
******If this was your solution thanks, and sorry for not remembering who posted it******
    Anyway there solution was.....

    Control Panel
    -Device Manager
    -Network Adapter
    -Wireless Card
    - Power Management (If you don't see this select another wireless card)
    - Uncheck all boxes
