Here is the benchmark of the new 320GB 7200RPM HD. I didn't get to test it to much as I am a bit busy but here are the HDTune results.

Note: These results were taken on a brand new XPS M1730 With Windows XP SP2. I didn't get around to doing a clean install yet, so these numbers should improve a bit.

    Here is the screen shot.

Hope this helps anyone looking to getting the HD.

Yea I know. I am really looking forward to benchmarking it some more. My now ex 200GB 7200rpm will have to accept defeat. I still don't know what company the new 320GB is.

Man, that m1530 sure is a beast of a computer.

Dell really struck the money with this one.

2 x 160GB seagate 7200rpm in raid 0 for 320GB comparison.....I bet two of those new 320GB jobs would honk in a raid setup.....pity the cost is probably prohibitive

Heh. I can definitely wait... gives me more time/money to do the fixes/upgrades on my new 1730, and I already have a single 320GB 5400RPM drive... that'll tide me over. :)

Off the top of my head, I believe they're a Seagate Momentus, I think?

Can't wait 'till they hit the general market... then it's RAID time. :)

I should have got two of them. Wouldn't it have been awesome, hooking up 2 320 7200RPM HD's as raid! Wow that would be fast!

Just take a second or two and go into device manager and look in the Disk Drives branch and it will show the model number of your drive. Post that info here...

Looks like the cost is about $205 at buy.com, free shipping. Not in stock, though.

That's a good price, for such a big, fast drive!

205$? wow, pretty steep. a 320/5400 goes for about 120$ now...

I disagree. If all you want is storage capacity, then the cheaper 5400RPM is a good deal. But, compare apples-to-apples...5400RPM and 7200RPM drives have never been priced similarly.

A 250GB 7200RPM drive (if you can find one) is [minimum] $170US. So, for the biggest, and fastest drive on the market, I'd surely pay the extra $35 for the extra capacity and speed.

The reason why I didn't get around to doing it is because the HD is my m1730 and I usually use my m1530. I didn't even get around to playing with the 1730 yet, I just opened it up to benchmark it.

Anyway thanks for the info guys. I like seagate.

Yeah Seagate makes excellent drives. I have a 200gb 7200.2 Momentus that I swap out with my 64GB SSD every once in a while, and I cannot complain about the performance at all.

For those interested in purchasing this drive, the Dell P/N is U093F, and its going for 244.95 plus S&H. You need to order it through Dell Spare Parts and not Dell E&A (or S&P, depending on where you are located and which division you purchase from :p)

Excellent. Thanks for the looking out. Isn't too much more expensive than higher-end 7200 drives; I'm looking at these for a RAID setup on my 1730.
