Hello everyone !
Have you guys actually tried to put a 7mm SSD in this laptop ?
That's what I did, just like this guy : Upgrade Inspiron 14 7000 HDD - YouTube
I put a Samsung 830 SSD, just like he did and it works just fine ! No need to use a mSata adapter.
I've got the same issue with Windows 8.1, it won't shut down. I've just downloaded the Intel driver that you posted, I hope it will work
Aside from Windows I'm also using openSUSE (13.1) which I prefer from far to Ubuntu. It's much more stable and lighter (KDE runs way better on openSUSE than it does on Kubuntu, I know it can sound weird but i've seen it with my own eyes on an old netbook).
It's using the 3.11 kernel so it works fine, the touchpad is ok, the sound and brightness keys work fine and the keys from F5 to F9 are unassigned.
F5 is like + F, F6 is something else and so on. I did a few binds on my own so they can be useful
Sadly there is still one problem, the wifi works but it is very weak. When I'm connected it's fine, I can download at 700KiB/s but I loose the connection all the time. I've tried a backport from the 3.12 kernel since it seems to have solved the problem for someone's Inspiron 15 7000 on another forum but it didn't work for me. Staying 5m away from my box all the time is kinda bothersome.
The wifi on windows is still great. -
Ok I've fixed the problem with windows 8.1, it's now shutting down properly.
I've just disabled the hibernation by typing "powercfg.exe /hibernate off" in the command prompt as an administrator.
The intel driver didn't work so I did this and it worked.
It was a good thing to do anyway since I'm running on an SSD.
I've seen someone asking if you can change the wireless card in this laptop. The answer is yes. Do it just like that guy : Dell Inspiron 7000 14" first impressions + goodies - AnandTech Forums
What are you guys going to do with the 32GB mSata SSD that is left in this laptop ? I was wondering what to do with mine. -
I installed a Samsung 840 EVO in 14 7000/7437 with zero problems. No need to take the ssd out of the case. I used the original hdd rubber holder and didn't see any bulge or gap. The Samsung data migration SW and cable made it a no brainer. Maybe the EVO is a little thinner or maybe I don't see so well but I didn't do any modifications.
-
For reference, the Seagate 600 7mm drives fit fine without any issues.
Also, I'm experiencing the disconnect issues with the 7260 card that has been well documented. tried updating to the experimental intel drivers that are supposed to fix the issue, but they did not help. Can anyone recommend a good wireless card to replace the 7260? I figure if I am replacing it I might as well get an 802.11AC card but the only retail ones I can find are the 7260 chipsets. -
Hey guys,
I need some help with my dell 7437. Im trying to replace it with a Samsung 840 EVO SSD 250gb with laptop upgrade kit. Ive installed the SSD but i cant do a fresh install of windows 8 like i wanted. Will battery life further improve if you change from HDD to SSD? I have the Hybrid HDD version and I have over 8 hours with wifi on.

I've been trying to get Dell to replace the faulty Intel 7260 wireless card in my brand new 7437 ( Intel® Wi-Fi Products — TechNote: Sporadic wireless disconnects caused by data reordering issue -- the experimental drivers do NOT fix the problem) but they continue to insist it is a software issue and want to wipe my computer before sending a technician out to do god knows what. I just did a fresh install last week on my new SSD and have spent a fair amount of time setting all of my programs up and transferring my data. I explained to them multiple times I just did a reformat but they won't have it. I've talked to six people now at Dell and they all insist it is a software issue, I even let them VNC my computer to do their "diagnostics" aka turn it off and back on again. I've got a business trip next week so I buckled and bought a broadcom card off of Amazon at my own expense. I've wasted enough time with Dell support, they're all monkeys and assume you are a monkey too. I guess that is what $1300 buys you.

check out my story with the dell 7537. Really nice laptop i tought but now i just want to trow it away with everything that happened the last month -
Then his supervisor called me back the next day to inform me specifically that she determined via the VNC session logs that it was not a hardware issue (OK, right). I watched his "diagnostics." He didn't even check what driver version I was using, he just enabled maximum performance when on battery in the power settings and did an IP release renew sequence in the command prompt.
That was the "premium support" I had to call after previously being on the phone with the "regular support" that dropped me after 45 minutes because I was not entitled to "regular support" only "premium support". Three hours in total so far.
Spent $10 on this thing: Amazon.com : Broadcom Wireless 802 11/a/g/n Internet WLAN Adapter Card for Laptops & Netbooks : Computer Internal Network Cards : Computers & Accessories
No bluetooth but I don't use it, and I'll keep the 7260 on hand in case Intel ever fixes it. I paid an extra 50 cents to buy it from the US so it gets here in a couple of days instead of two weeks from China. -

I just got my Inspiron 14 7000 last night and I have a hard time booting to BIOs. I've tried F2 or FN+F2 but still cann't get in, can someone help please?
Thanks -
I haven't seen anyone having done what I am planning. Wondering if anyone has put an msata SSD in an inspiron 7437 and then cloned the hard drive to the msata drive?
Thanks. -
You're going to run into issues cloning an HDD to an SSD because of alignment. I highly recommend you just do a fresh install with Win 8 OEM. -

I'm really sure that there some more "smart" but this works, for me. -

Hi all
I'm going to get this notebook, could you list me what kind of update are needed at the start? Ex.: graphic card to avoid hibernation issue, etc
Thank you at all

Hey guys, now you have lots of experiences with this laptop and I'd like to know if possible to upgrade with Samsung 840 EVO mSATA 1TB SSD and WD 7mm 1TB HDD in the same time?
Is the UK edition really coming with 750M discrete GPU? In USA not possible?
Update;
Never mind, I've just read the whole topic and it looks like the 1TB SSD + 1TB HDD won't be problem to use with this laptop. It would be nice if someone could update the first post and people can find answers faster.
But what about the 750M graphics in the European model, is that true? -
So I've read through this thread and I found it very helpful, but I have a question I'd REALLY appreciate having an answer to before I order hardware.
I ordered the 7000 that comes with a 500gb hard drive and a 32gb msata drive.
Are those, in fact, separate pieces of hardware? Or is it one of those hybrid drives?
And- on which drive is the operating system and all the other software that comes with installed?
Thanks so much for your help.
EDIT-
Okay so I just spent a LONG time talking with Dell and finally tracked down this information-
the HDD can be upgraded to 1tb, and it has all the softwware installed on it.
the mSATA is for cache only and can't have anything installed on it (it doesn't have a drive letter).
If that is the case, is there really a big advantage to upgrading the mSATA? -
OMG I have exactly the same problem...

Hi, someone can suggest me a way to connect this stupid pc with only hdmi to an external projector with a vga input?
Adapters are expensive and I don't want to spend money for something that doesn't work. Someone had this problem? How resolved? Which adapter has used?
Thanks! -
I like the build quality of this laptop but I am returning it due to the issue that someone in this thread already described with the uneven screen brightness. I doubt the glass has anything to do with it. If you're not viewing the panel at a direct angle you get a shadow that either comes down from the top or from the bottom depending on which way you tilt the screen and that's just annoying as hell.

Luckily Intel has already got new drivers available that fix it, surprised Dell doesn't know that:

Hi I tried this thread but the page is not working.
Could you please tell me which Intel update is recommended to solve this "laptop goes to sleep mode after 5 min of non activity but never comesback" problem I have been facing for long..
I tried to contact Dell several times, I gave up and just adjusted myself with the system (very frustrating sometimes)

URGENT advice needed. *I still have 2 days left to return it to Best Buy*
For a while now I've wanted a laptop to edit MANY hours of 720p AVCHD (.mt2s) home movies. I really wanted something portable with an i7, Windows based that looked and had the dimensions of a MacBook Pro and was bellow $1,000. I feel/felt I found it in the new Inspiron 14 7437 until I started having issues.
Everything seems to be working fine but the wifi speed I get is SLOW. I have close to100Mbps on the hardwired home PC and just feet away I get 15-20 Mbps on the 7437 while I get 50-60 Mbps on my iPad and iPhone. When farther away I barely get 1-3 Mbps on the 7437 while I get 3 x that speed on the iPad or iPhone.
I spent one hour chatting with Dell and the person changed settings on the Intel 7260 network card and updated drivers with no change.
I'm more than willing o upgrade the wifi card if need since I could not find another laptop that really met my needs like this one.
Any tips, advice, suggestions? Should I have Dell change out the card? Should I just return it? -

Hi guys, I update windows to the 8.1 version, now the camera app doesn't work, show me this message: "Looks that there's something wrong with your camera. Check the manufacturer's website for troubleshooting info". I already ran the Dell Doctor app to check if everything it's ok and no errors found with the webcam, so I don't know how to fix this error. Could you please give me some ideas of what to do?, other thing, how I add a special character using the alt code? I put for example alt+164 or fn+alt+164 and nothing.

Hi,
I have recently received this laptop and have one or two problems. I wonder if anyone can advise on these, if I can't resolve them I will have to return the laptop.
1. The trackpad - I can't get edge scrolling working without using an older Synaptics driver. The bigger issue is that the pad is very unresponsive, especially when dragging things like shortcuts or files from and into iTunes. It just doesn't respond, until I go and reselect and drag an item. Does anyone have these problems?
2. The display - There appears to be a large amount of backlight bleed on the bottom of the display, visible during dark video scenes or solid blacks are displayed. This is particularly evident when booting up the laptop and it displays the Dell splash screen.
3. HDD - Makes annoying noises at times, a sort of clicking sound. -
Hi !
I'am interested in buying dell 7437, however in my country only the HD version are sold no Full HD screen options. It is possible to upgrade the screen with the part from here :
Screen for Dell INSPIRON 14 7437. Replacement Laptop LCD Screens
Thank you -
hi - I have the BestBuy Inspiron 14 7000 ( i7437T-3759sLV ) with the I7 500gb 5400rpm disk. The BestBuy model does not have the 32gb caching SSD disk. While I have read a few people have upgraded to a full SSD, I am unable to find any comment or thread that lists
* a specific brand (and preferable a link to amazon or newegg) known working 5mm disk that will fit.
* a retrofit / modification to a specific 7mm disk that will fit (I understand this will not fit directly, can it be removed from the case?)
* a model number or replacement part that would allow the 500gb+32gb to be substituted for the "regular" 500gb disk (or perhaps the 32gb is separate and can be added to the BestBuy model.
If there is someone that has successfully (not a work in progress) completed this upgrade and would share the specifics, that would be great!
thanks, nbrhb -
If you search a few pages back, there a a few people that said they had no problem installing a 7mm SSD without making any modifications. (EDIT: I watched a youtube video on this drive installation and what the person did was cut the rubber protectors from the original drive to use as a bumper around the drive. The rubber is what makes the 5mm drive take up all of the space.) I'm currently waiting for Dell to ship this laptop to me and I think in the future I'll upgrade to a Samsung EVO 250GB SSD. This is 7mm and a bunch of people have used it.
Does anyone happen to know if Dell has fixed the issue with the wireless card? -
As for the 32gb ssd cache, this is a separate msata drive. I heard from one source that if you didn't order the laptop with that option, that the msata connector would not be included and you would only be able to use the SATA HDD connector for a single drive. Because of this I ordered the 500+32 option from Dell in case I want to install a second SSD for more storage later.

how is the hinge of the laptop screen holding up for those who have had it for a while. The one on display at Best Buy was really loose and kept flopping over to the front and back.

I have had this laptop i7-4500, 8GB, 1920x1080) for about 5 months and I have a love/hate relationship with it. Dell is another matter, I dislike their support and their products in general, quality wise, seem to be in decline.
Display, keyboard, battery life - all good. I bought mine from Best Buy i7-4500 1920x1080, no 32GB mSATA, 512 GB HDD. I really have no complaints about this laptop. In reality, it's pretty sweet - when it's working.
About 2 months after I got it, the 512 GB magnetic HDD crashed. Dell Service was completely useless (recall it was purchased from BB). I eventually got it back from them and purchased and reinstalled a new Seagate 2.5 5mm, 512 GB magnetic HDD (essentially I had to do my own factory replacement). The next ordeal was getting the OEM (re) installation media from Dell since they don't put JACK in the box. OK, so that's done (another week bye-bye). Reinstall Windows and the system wouldn't authenticate using the license key stored in the system board/BIOS (I aint paying for another). So after another X hours with Dell Tech Support over several days I am finally back to my original, operational $900 laptop (no thanks to Dell Support, though, thank you very much).
OK, so you guys considering the mSATA option for SSD... do consider this carefully...
I don't trust the thin magnetic HDD in this laptop, I think they're pushing limits of technology. So I thought I'll upgrade to SSD. Brilliant, no? No. I got one 512 GB SSD from Transcend thinking it would just install in the HDD bay. Not! I returned that for a refund, and more googling I landed on Crucial's website which GUARANTEED compatibility with Inspiron 14 7437. Well it arrives and its the exact same thing as the Transcend module I just returned (total wasted $40 shipping). So I call Cucial. Their tech support is decent, but not great. You can talk to a human almost immediately, (less than a minute wait every time I called), but they're not as smart s they should be. Read on if you dare...
This is where I get the news (from Crucial TS) that the mSATA slot this SSD module is "guaranteed to be compatible with" is underneath every GD thing in the laptop: back cover, battery, WLAN card, speakers, fan, system main board, numerous tiny screws, flex cables, multiple cable connectot interfaces, etc.
OK. I used to do stuff like this for a living, but it's been a while and my eyes are not all that good anymore (glasses only do so much). Long story short... I get that SSD thing in there. The only thing I broke was the speakers - the connecter there was so tiny and flimsy that I misaligned pins and pushed too hard. I fire everything up and I'm fully operation (except for speakers). Since the mSATA went under the SMB, I could still use the HDD to start Windows (that helped). So the SSD is in Device Manager, Disk Manager and Explorer, but Windows can't do anything with it (IO Error). Turns out that (according to previous posts on this very thread) that maybe Inspiron 14-7437 doesn't support 512GB on the mSATA (256GB max). So Crucial TS knew that I had to tear the whole GD thing apart but they didn't know that Dell Inspiron 14-7437 only supports up to 256GB in mSATA slot? That is where they lost my support for any further attempts on the SSD upgrade. They said "bad module". I said "RMA". So going back into the gauntlet to remove the SSD to return it is twice as sketchy now because these cheap Chinese builds (connectors especially) are not made for multiple cycles (take off, put on, take off, put on, etc.).
So this lengthy post is a warning to Inspiron 14 - 7437 users planning to use that mSATA slot under the SMB.
1) Unless you do or have done that sort of thing for a living, think carefully. A replacement main board for i7-4500 8GB is about $280.
2) Don't attempt buying/installing any SSD over 256GB
3) In my opinion, a better option is one of the 7mm SATA options, since I) taking the back plate off and removing/reinstalling a 2.5" drive there is manageable by mere mortals, and ii) it allows you to get over the 256GB limitation of the hard to reach mSATA option.
That's my two cents, thanks for reading. -
Hi,
Interesting thread reading through all this. Decided to go for one and mine turned up recently, however upon receiving I've noticed that the frontal corners of the lid do not sit flush with the body of the laptop and appear to curve upwards. Has anybody else encountered this issue? Seems to detract away from the appeal of the thing in my opinion as its pretty smart looking otherwise. The curve upwards seems to be symmetrical to the other side which is making me think is it meant to look like this by design? Would be good to hear if this is the case or not. Otherwise I'm pretty pleased with this. Pics below;

I bought this laptop and returned it right away because the screen is just too dim even at full brightness (in comparison to my Lenovo Yoga 1). I don't know why but when I put the screens side by side and opened a pdf doc, the Dell had this creamy tinge to it and the Lenovo was bright clean white. Other than that in general too the screen is too dim and I have to literally squint to see some things at day time. My eyes couldn't take it so returned it.

Anyone have a motherboard schematic diagaram for this laptop- 7437? Mine is completely dead after a catastrophic power outage here and has blown fuses, the best that can be done so far is to have the power indicator light turn on when a charger is plugged in. The fans don't run, and it refuses to turn on. I need the board schematic to attempt further repairs. Thanks Guys.

this laptop definitely can support mSATA SSD of 500 GB. I just installed it.

Do these models have a msata slot? If so is it the same for the 7348? Thanks
