Like many, I was interested in a new Dell Studio 13, and while doing some research came upon this. It seems Dell has a new series of Inspirons out, the 13R, 14R, and 15R. So far I've found them for sale in the Pacific rim area, India, and Israel... but not the US yet. I've also noticed that in the US, the Studio 14 has started losing options on the CTO pages, and is no longer offered on the small business menu... maybe being discontinued but that's speculation on my part.

Anyways, here's the links to the eye candy on the new Inspiron 13R, 14R, and 15R:

Great find. These are great specs for the Inspiron. The 13R will be a big seller in the US if Dell keeps the price in-line.

The next release should be the new 13" Studio XPS with my dream specs: 13" 1600 x 900/I5-540M/HD5650/160GB X25-M SSD/4GB DDR3/8hr. Battery. :D

Too many 13"-14" ultra-portables with low res screen options - I would love this setup. I just returned my Vaio Z because I was unsatisfied with it, but there's nothing else with 1600x900 res in this price point with a decent video card.

Been looking at the Acer TimelineX(13in), M11x, and the current Dell studios.
This seems like a much better option but i hope there is a 7200RPM drive in the US/CN. The Acer's are taking forever, the M11x has no ix. I rly hope this is what im looking for.

Edit: So the price seems to be around HK7000 to HK8000, this is around $900 to $1100 CAN/US right?

What didn't you like about the Sony?

The higher quality display will be added on the 13" XPS refresh. Would love to see an I5-540M/HD5650 combo. Q4 or late Q3 till we know. I'll probably have an Acer 3820TG by then.

Without de-railing this thread too bad, I'll sum up my frustration with the z by saying I expected more from my $2000 than an underclocked, lower middle class gpu that still got to 93c when under load, an obnoxious fan (even at idle) and paying for things I didn't necessarily need. I never use an ODD anymore, and I don't NEED dual raid SSDs that don't support trim when I have been perfectly happy with the 2 intel x-25m drives I've owned. The weight was amazing, as was the keyboard and screen, but they didn't outweigh the negatives IMO. I'll be patient and wait for something else to come along.

Excellent find. I really like the extensive use of faux brushed metal on the lid and palmrest.

It's funny, the reason I didn't buy the Sony when it first came out was that i was waiting to see what Dell was going to do with the Studio 13. Then I saw the Acer 3820TG and decided that I would prefer that to the Z, based purely on the HD 5650. I also wanted to use an Intel G2 drive. At that point, i bought a 1410T to hold me over until the Acer arrived. I was not crazy about the Sony SSD, nor the price. I don't even have an internal ODD in my desktop I didn't need on in a 13" laptop.

These inspirons are really nice. They don't quite compare to the hardware in the Acer 3820TG, but they'll be available a lot earlier than the Acer will.

    Bronsky

Sry to hijack the thread for a sec but I needed to know.

Well these pics confirm my earlier thoughts that the design is similar to the current Dell mini 10 with the hinge. Interesting to see it when it comes out.

These are AMD's new 45nm Champlain cpu's on the Danube platform. I think all the R's are ugly since they have that weird butt to make the battery sit flush.

Interesting move for Dell. I would like a better GPU paired with the quad.

The optional HD550V is what - a TV and home entertainment controller? Any 3D performance to speak of. Why not the 600 series with support for digital instead of only analog? I vote for a Phenom II x4 and HD5650 in the new XPS 13. The battery would last about 22 min. :D

I badly wanted to buy a dell ( great support, up to date models) but my only grouse was their dreadfully plain styling. Was looking at the vostro V13/3300, but none of them have any discrete graphics. When I saw the R series inspirons, it was almost as if they'd read my mind
Sadly, the deep blue displayed in the galleries is not available (only peacock blue is)

What worries me is if those hinges are rugged enough? They don't look ( and based on feedback from those who did try it out) don't feel as sturdy as the barrel hinged ones. Will they last ? I'm getting 3 year complete cover, but still worried about what happens after :(

customize options are available at the dell india site, but there are no hardware customizations available. 4 hardware combos are listed for the 14R & 15R. The dell rep says that they haven't started building em custom

This brings up a big question for me:

What's the point of the Studio brand in Dell's lineup? After the R series are introduced you'll have the following:

    Inspiron

    Inspiron R

    Studio

    Studio XPS

There's a massive amount of overlap in the Inspiron and Inspiron R lines. Sure some systems like the Inspiron 13 haven't been updated in the US to reflect the new Insprion design language, and would benefit from a upgrade, but Dell just did a total redo of the rest of the lineup a few months ago. Not to mention that they are selling the older "cheap glossy black plastic" design alongside these newly designed models.

Meanwhile, while the Studio has got updated internals, the design seems unchanged from launch with only the palmrest plastics being changed to a solid silver, loss of touch sensitive buttons, and lid/border color choice changes. It looks dated and dare I say "cheaper" looking when compared to the current "new" Inspirons.

I wonder if these will be Studio branded machines, or if Dell will kill off the Studio branding all together. Perhaps they will move Studio upmarket, replacing the "Studio XPS" brand since the XPS name is pretty much gone due to Alienware.

I think the Inspiron Rs are going to replace the Inspirons, the name change is because they are also changing the look of the laptop. This is more than a refresh but its still Insprion. :)

I have a Inspiron 1520 and the Speaker's are on the bottom. They are loud, but not screaming, 7/10 i think. Also the quality again is good but not close to a good stereo. 6.5/10. The studios have much better speakers. :spinny:

hmm interesting, i didnt know it was 2010 that the new ones were out, i thought it was earlier. That is very interesting then i agree that there is too much overlap if the Rs are going to be a new line altogether.

Its all quite interesting, but will they then refresh the Studio line as well? As of this moment, the smaller laptop offerings by Dell are, in my opinion at least, anemic.

My kingdom for a 13-14" i5-540, ATI HD 5650 (switchable, please?), backlit keyboard, ~4 hrs in cruise mode, decent display, Multitouch, bluetooth, HDMI, WiDi, decent chassis... okay I am getting greedy here.

Actually, I agree completely. And you know what the worst part is... I don't think those specs really qualify as 'asking for too much' from a portable laptop. The aluminum case won't happen, not in a Studio or XPS line, but the fake metal they have on the Inspiron R's will be fine. Drop in that i5-540 and a vaguely decent GPU, (and the backlight! that's a deal-breaker), and I'll buy.

I don't think I can milk my existing Dell much longer... Come on Dell, roll out a new 13" or 14" option, will ya!

Turns out the dell Rep I spoke with was a bit liberal/optimistic with the truth.

He revised the date to monday(may 31st), and when i prodded him, gave me a worst case date of friday (june 4th). The dell order status now says June 9th.

    This sucks

well, ive become fed up with waiting and reexamined my needs and have decided to buy an m11x. The core i series would be nice, but in reality, i really dont need it and the features of the current oner are going to suit me just fine
