OK, the new M1530 is out looking sweet just like baby bro M1330, but Dell sure poked the pooch with the 1730--tugly. Time for them to try again by rolling out a new 17inch, let's say the M1735, and have to take on the M1530 styling. Oh... and they can drop in those beautiful new 88's to handle my games while their at it.

Dual 8800 in SLi and RAID wont fit in to a slim profile like M1330/M1530 even at 17”.

I thought the same when shopping for a new laptop. But I couldn't turn down the spec on the 1730 for the price being offered.

When it finally arrived I changed my mind. The laptop actually looks quite good in my opinion now. Im not a fan of the silver keyboard. But it looks awesome at night with all the lights on, and I really am a huge fan of the backlit keyboard.

It looks like it means business.

Hey, in my opinion Dell is trying much harder to improve their look and build at this point even if this one is a miss. They tried to take the radical road and... sometimes that doesn't work so well. But I think Dell will learn from that. The 1730 is one of a kind to, there aren't many competitors like it from mainstream consumers brands (You have to go boutique from Alienware or Sager). I wonder if Dell will put these monsters in retail so they to can be seen in person.

I agree. I really like the 1530, but would prefer a 17 inch version, without SLI, more like a light, good-looking, slim premium laptop than a gaming laptop. Either that, or a slimmed down Inspiron 1720 or Vostro 1700.

In short, I would like a 17 inch laptop, but all of Dell 17 inchers are too bulky and rather plain or ugly.

Any thoughts on how likely it is that Dell would introduce a slim 1700, 1720 or 1730?

If you want power (as in more than the 8600GT), then you can't really go with the "slim" notion. So until they figure out how to make high end GPUs (8800+) that run cool, you won't see a slim and powerful machine.

Dell's 17" laptops are pretty darn bulky but it's understandable for the gaming untis. For the mainstreams though I think they could do better. The HP's are a little more sleek but by far one of the best looking 17" I've seen are sony. I was in my aunt's office the other day and I noticed her laptop, it was definatley 17 inch and it was thin, sleek, and light(for the size). Unfortuantely I didn't catch the model. If dell could make the inspirons look like that, sales would certainly spike.
