Dear Friends can u give me your valuable suggestions , is this good system or worth for money? I'd like to do some gaming, definitely video editing/production and watch movies. Also... typical office apps, and photo manipulation, program compilation, dot net program development . I like to keep my hardware for five years, buying the best available architecture, but not necessarily the top of the line in performance. Your suggestions will be very much valuable for me. Waiting for your comments.

lovely - I have an older Dell 1555 and I am very happy with it. That said, here are a couple of considerations. First, the lid/LCD is kind of flimsy so this isn't a good system to "toss" into your backpack - especially since you want to keep it up to five years. And, overall, the 1555 isn't the must rugged system. I would not say the case is flimsy like the lid, but there is a little too much flex to suit me. And, interestingly, Best Buy is introducing a Studio 1569 which has (supposedly) a magnesium lid and it looks to have a slimmer build. Best of luck with your decision and new system ...

Howitzer225 Death Company Dreadnought
Still stuck with the 4570? Come on Dell, put a 5xxx series in the Studio 15.
-
me too would like to this, could anyone tell me, is it gets hotter compare to 2 due core processor ?
india buyers, whether is it available in croma/staple/ezone exactly above model or modified as dell people to take ages to deliver stuffs. -
Any Other Comments
-
I did check with dell people(Bengaluru India) , they said , it might take more than one month to shipment once we order.:confused2:
-
You are absolutely right katanayi. they told me its lead time is 20 days.
-
I am waiting for Dell to start offering BluRay again ... otherwise, I like it ... this is the guy I plan on getting ... mind you the new Toshiba i5 catches my eye too ...

Today ordered dell studio 15 i5

2010 with 3MB L3 cache and 2 Core thats lame. Why?
I have always considered L2 cache superior. L1 cache small amounts really fast. L2 cache much more but closer to L1. L3 cache not as close to L1 these Core i5's only have 256KB of L2 cache per core.
Anyways ok lets talk Turbo Boost.
2.53Ghz so it shuts down 1 Core leaving 1 Core boosted at 3.06Ghz. In 2010 and 2011 just 1 Core is not going to cut it on anything.
Core i7 Quad Core 32nm with 8MB of cache now thats worth the investment in a new machine. -
Thanks Ice Cold, Any other comments for average users?! -
poor gaming performance, and mainly its 2010, going onto 2011, and I already have 2 Cores.
A 2 Core machine will not be suffcient, for things you care about going forward.
And why DELL removed the Bluray option is crazy they took a step back.
Watching Blurays mobile on a 17" 1920x1200 RGB LED made by LG is amazing the colors and clarity. Now even new machines can't be configured with Bluray. -
Ice Cold: I think you are totally under estimating what these new CPUs can do.
With two threads fully loaded and with turbo boost fully engaged they can run at a maximum of 2800 MHz. Compare that to a Core i7-720. When it has more than 2 cores fully loaded, excessive power consumption is usually starting to trigger the end of all turbo boost so it's only running at its default of 1600 MHz. That's a 75% difference in MHz which will make up for the reduced cache.
There are a lot of apps that are going to be able to run just as fast if not faster on these new Dual Cores compared to the Core i7-720 Quad. I think even when gaming, if two systems had the same video card that the performance would be very similar. Most games are not well threaded enough to take advantage of a Quad.
Being an early adopter is risky. If you like to keep your laptops for a while then you'd be better off to wait a couple of months. The ATI 4000 series is last generation technology. Personally, I'd wait for one of the ATI 5000 series GPUs which have significantly better performance with less power consumption. -
A VERY large amount of programs that average users use are still single-threaded. Hell, very few games even take advantage of multithreading. About the only thing you really truly need multiple CPU cores for is heavy-duty video editing, massive photoshopping, or running more than one distributed computing client at full speed.
My overclocked Core 2 Duo in my desktop still isn't really being taxed by anything that's not video encoding, and even that is fast enough for me.
The future of laptops is, imo, portability not power. Smaller, slower, low-power CPUs with slower low-power GPUs and 12-15" screens is what the average user wants.
And Bluray on a 17" screen = fail. -

I hate the 45nm Core i7's bad investment overall.
However the newer Dual Core 32nm Arrandales make a nice upgrade over the Core 2 Duo's
But which one should, I get ? Or whats the difference??
I see very very little.
Intel® Core™ i5-540M
Intel® Core™ i7-610E
both are 2.53Ghz, Intel's deliberate agenda to utterly confuse people is working. Core i7 and a class lower Core i5 are both 2 Cores only. Whats the difference.? At this rate Core i3 will have Quad Cores. LOL -
Watching videos, surfing the net, or playing games aren't serious CPU tasks. Gaming performance is mostly dependent on the GPU.
From what the OP said, he'll be doing some video production, which is the only thing remotely CPU intensive. I think the Core i series is a good investment as its the fastest thing to come to the mobile world in a while, but don't expect a 5 year lifespan. This never never.....never happens. -
i agree with MrX8503 ........

It's listing with ATI 4570 now, btw.

i have planning to buy a laptop in 40000 to 50000 INR..
i was planning to buy dell studio 14 with
t6600 processor
with 3gb ddr3 ram
and a dedicated graphics card ..
untill i came to know about this studio 15 with i5 processor launched by dell for 48900 INR
i am a decent gamer and would like to have a laptop with decent gaming performance and with good life in the above money range ..
any suggestions please .... n i wish to buy a laptop as soon as possible ... -
edit: @xording: take a look at the new asus N series, they are quite cheap (around 1200 dollars), and are way better for gaming than the old gpu's which dell still offers. -
Maybe some Street Fighter 4 and Starcraft 2, WOW. Half Life 2, Maybe Crysis on Med settings. -
thanx a lot guys ...
-
1 more thing i would like to ask you guys ...
is this new processor better then the say higher core2 duo processors like p8700..??? -
yes, in every aspect.
also, when you're not running intensive 3d application, laptop will be running on integrated graphics instead of dedicated 4570 which means battery will last a lot longer -
After going much conversation on this topic, Now Finally I have placed the order for Dell Studio 15 withIntel® Core™ i5-540M. Thanks a lot bro ..........

The 32nm Core i5 and 32nm Core i7 even though they are only 2 Cores, should run very cool at 32nm and be enery effcient. Allowing them to Turbo Boost up to 3.06Ghz all the time and when needed. They should be totally fantastic. Unlike the 45nm Core i7's which are Quad Core they run way hot use 45 Watts TDP, and even when its needed fail to Turbo Boost, because they temperature is too high, so they slow down.

today morning recived by Blu dart, a day b4 EDD( 7days total)
Full HD Screen is awesome
sound is good
CD drive is working...just cheking
even webcam clarity is great!!
planning to clean install with win 7 ultimate and divide drive -
Ouch !!!
going from a P7450 cre 2 duo to the i5-520M adds £200 to the price. -
guys .
what about the i3-330 processor ..??
and how does L3 cache does really matter .. isn't dat dependent on architecture ? -
Hmm doesn't seem to be popular?
-
Two totally different breed of users. -
Are the graphics switchable in the new Studios with Core i5/7 processors?
-
As soon as Dell brings BluRay back ... I am in.
The Toshiba 16" I5 model is real tempting as it has:
Intel N
BluRay
I5
The kicker is the screen. I would like to have at least 1600x900.
Dell right now is the only one offering that or higher on 15" models.
I will even settle for Dell's N if they bring BluRay back ... -
-
I got my laptop in 7 days thanks dell.
-
-
-
Battery backup only 2.5 hrs
-
Why so much time for me?
-
-
-
Congrats to those who ave received their systems
Can anyone of you confirm if the studio 15 with i5 has switchable graphics???
Which chipset does it use?? hm55 or pm55 -
-
-
@timolol
Thanks. It's bad news and probably a dealbreaker for me
Another thing, did you contact dell support about this?? I mean it is one of the features of arrandale processors and it must be supported!!!
Maybe, they plan to implement it by bios upgrade or driver update
P.S.I know support personnels are really difficult guys!! They don't know a thing
@smilepak
Definitely there is no question of switchable graphics unless there is a dedicated card -
-
for me it took total 7days to get laptop in hand.
good luck -
^Oh thanks, will continue in that thread...
