That is just retarded.
You seem like a knowledgeable guy and your requirements for a notebook that you posted earlier are almost exactly like mine (except battery life is close to meaningless to me). Have you found any other models of interest that fit the criteria? The two HD slots are really key for me. I'm starting to be in a rush to find a new notebook as my old one is really falling apart.
What do you think about the HP DV8t?
-
I will see how things play out tomorrow I am going to talk with a friend who works for Dell at there head offices here in Toronto, hopefully he can give me a hand with this.
In the mean time please let me know if you guys find any computers with similar specs! The closest Toshiba to this will cost me 500 CDN more before taxes! :/ -
There just aren't any systems that are the same as the 1747. This is the first time that the build quality hasn't matched the price though. The HP has the best bang for the buck. You get everything including bluray for $1299. With the same specs the 1747 will run $1650. -
So I have been following this thread... I ordered back on November 23rd and have been patiently waiting... originally 12/18 then 12/29, and now 1/10... so bottom line are we waiting for screens? (1080p)... this is getting a bit crazy. How long is this wait going to stretch out? I played a similar waiting game last year for my 1737, what's weird is last year I starting getting emails where I had to confirm that I wanted to wait - that doesn't appear to be happening this year...
-
maybe we should start a post dedicated for the 1080p screen delay
Maybe we should call Dell Sales and ask them if they are ever getting them lol see what they say....
IF they do cancel the order I will be really pissed off since there were a lot of other sales a lot of us could have taken advantage of... -
I'm still waiting for mine as well. It is supposed to be here Friday...yeah right! -
ohh and its actually longer for me... I ordered my system on early Nov/2009 the one I received kept getting a BSOD, took almost 20min to start up and the utility they had me run on start up got several error codes, some with power issue.. Dell offered to replace it for me GREAT Thank you Dell.... but I still don't have a working laptop... so here I am almost 2 months later with a 17inch paper weight in my house waiting for some type of status update.... -
Simply said the Dell inventory systems works like this:
Whenever someone makes an order, the appropriate materials are automatically ordered (through an extranet between Dell and his suppliers). Periodically the suppliers bring the (automatic) demanded goods and materials to the Dell assembly factory. These deliveries probably happen more than once a day.
The whole danger in this system is that suppliers can't deliver. You have to imagine that as a supplier for Dell you'll have to be extremely flexible, because you demand is unknown. Dell does not say how much of your products they'll need. They can give an estimate, but still. Estimates aren't waterproof as we all know. So you'll try to find a balance. At one hand you want to be able to deliver to Dell and on the other hand you don't want to produce too much and have a lot of useless stock left.
As you can see, the key in this whole story are the sales estimates. Well, history has told that estimates only become somewhat reliable once you have sold some of the specific goods. So once Dell has sold his new product for a while, the sales department will be able to give a more accurate sales estimate, based on the latest sales data. Thus, suppliers will be better informed and the chance they won't be able to deliver will go down significantly.
I hope now you understand a bit better why sometimes Dell and his suppliers can't always deliver (new) products on time.
You might think: what's the whole benefit from using JIT then? The answer is lower to no inventory cost and flexibility. Which translates into lower prices for the consumer and also the configurable desktops and notebooks.
So when you buy a Dell, know that the lower price and custom configuration has his price!Attached Files:

I think at this point I hope my order gets cancelled with all the issues with this thing lol....I will just unretire the ole m1530...which by the grace of god still works for some reason...who knows...I won't buy another power adapter to make this thing work properly if that's the case...soooo I will scrutinize the hell out of it if an when it shows up...if it passes muster then like the 1530 I shall keep it ...but I for one won't jump through all the hoops that shouldn't be there in the first place to make this thing run as it's supposed to in the first place...sorry for the rant but we saw this movie before with the grainy screens and defective gpu's on the previous model...cheers and good luck to all of us that with all the delays it is actually helping with the QC issues that are going on as of late...by mid January maybe they will have this thing and the xps 16 working...
-
How do you test for the throttling problem?
Also as far as delays are concerned... my other 1747 I ordered (for the wife) didn't have the 1080p and is now delayed till January... orig was dec 28th. So it's def more than JUST the screens on B/O.
call the support line, they will transfer you around a bit, but make sure you talk to someone in customer care. I was able to get a refund of $175 because of the system delayHope this helps some of you with delays.

All the info is in this thread....look for unclewebb's info...he has a workaround until Dell can find a solution...cheers!!!!

There is no excuse for uncertainty, the maybe 1 week maybe more, the I don't know, the call back later. There is also no excuse for someone to call and tell me it will be there within 3 -5 business days and in reality it has taken a lot longer than that. As soon as you place an order Dell charges your order right away and then to call customer service I have spent hours just waiting for someone to pickup, yet if you call dell SALES less than 3 seconds to pickup they want your money they just don't want you to bother them when they cant deliver as promised.
No where have I ever seen a computer take more than 1 month to be built and shipped. Supplier constraints.... its the holidays ramp up your production line... that's still no excuse. To tell me that supplies are unknown..... its bad management. Its a new item its a hot item make more of it. Its like the Nintendo Wii when it first came out couldn't find one anywhere, but vendors did know when to expect shipments from them they where not coming from distributors they were coming directly from the manufacture, for dell to not know when they will receive move of the screens is bad management, bad planning and bad customer service.
Do you work for the supplier or dell... can you give me an ETA? lol

Sager is very nice, but will run $500+ more most likely. I specced one I liked with same specs (much better video) for about $2300. And of course battery life is non-existent. It's a very nice laptop though and if they had a normal 9cell I would have spent $$$.
Btw, I reinstalled the driver and decided to keep the stupid thing. Got stable overclock at 7850 or so 3dmark06 (1280x1024). No better CPUs are coming out any time soon, and while, yes I would love to have better video (like GTX 260) its unlikely to happen next 2 months. -

Hey guys,
It finally happened, less than a week of ownership and the dreaded 7 beeps of death met me his morning when I turned my my 1747, not mentioning the other issues.
Well I spoke with my friend at Dell today he told me the problem lies in the motherboard, I forget the chipset or what motherboard number it was now. Anyway the problem will not be going away any time soon I have been told. They do not have a fix, or even a plan until 'sometime' in the new year.
My friend told me he would keep me updated on the going ons, if you guys would like I can pop on whenever I hear back from him. Sadly I would not expect that to be any time soon by the way he was talking.
I cannot believe Dell is still knowingly selling these computers! My friend told me the volume of returns is the highest he has ever seen, sad part is for those that do not get the 7 beeps of death before the 30 days for return are up.
-
But you can't compare the Wii with a Dell laptop. The Wii is a non-customized product and Nintendo does not have a almost 100% just-in-time. They have stocks. Production is in batches. So they know how much they'll have to produce on short term. This is'nt the case with Dell.
Now I'll stop discussinggot a bit off topic. Hope all of you who ordered get their notebooks soon!!
-
Bad news also. The motherboard, that's kind of, half of the computer hardware itself! Hope they get it sorted for 2010.
All these bad signals about the 1747's introduction keep me waiting a while before ordering. Who knows when it's solved, they will sell the 1747 with the arrandale cpu's, which would conveniently solve their throttling issue.
I would not be surprised if Dell would make this move.
You can't avoid a malfunctioning motherboard, but a cpu can be replaced by another one, without much change to the notebook structure itself.
Well, let's hope it doesn't get as far as that. Let's hope Dell will be honest and solve the goddamn issues with the 1747! -
I was also worried about the laptop before I purchased it I should have held off but wanted it so bad. I am just glad this all happened before the 30 days was up, I would hate to be stuck with this laptop! Though I would hope Dell would return those laptops that get the 7 beeps of death even if it is after the 30 days.
I am sadI wanted the 1747!

hi all
I have a question to all of you who have had the 7 bips of death with the 1747 : before the final breath of your laptop, did you, by any chance, update the bios and firmwares available on the dell site ? If no, would you remembre what bios was on your laptop ? last but not least : did every unlucky owner of dead 1747 STRESS the computer via different stress tests like prime+atitool or I don't know what ? was it a i720 qm processor only ? or i820qm ? we need as many details as possible to narrow down the issue ...
a french user who just received his 1747 that you all scared to the highest level -

as far as I can see, most of the dead PC died during sleep mode ... am I mistaken ?
(by default, 7 goes to sleep, on A/C or battery, after inactivity)
could it be an overheating/overpowering of the motherboard/CPU during sleep mode ???
I unactivated everything related to sleep for now on my windows ... (even wake up events) -
Here`s more users with same problem (sleep/hibernate mode used everytime?): http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19310587/19615237.aspx?PageIndex=3 -
This is going to be a gamble to keep this thing...even if it makes it past the 1st few days...seems like a ticking time bomb....with all the posts ...this will make it hard for me to keep even if it works!!!...damn...decisions...decisions...
-
If you want to be safe, just return it within 21 days and wait for an update from Dell (if any are forthcoming). One thing though, I am using 130w power supply. I can easily see killing the laptop if you use ThrottleStep and 90w PSU while running heavy benchmarks on CPU and GPU at same time. Even without ThrottleStep this would be iffy, IMO. -
I ordered mine in an other country....bothering very nice people running around for the package (f*ck UPS) I'll finally receive it on the 26th only to probably send it back in a week..... Which will coast a great amount (for me) of money to ship it back to Germany(so that warranty applies), then ship it back to dell, and I'll bother those nice folks again....
I'm pretty pissed right now.
Though i'll try to relocate the warranty, but afaik only 3 year InHome/Next Business Day warranty is worldwide. I have 1 year parts only.
Anyone know about this stuff?
Also I'll try to get a 130W or 150W power supply for it. Or maybe a 3rd Party power supply that is sufficient(19.5V). And surely wont use sleep mode.
then we'll see what happens. -
Does anyone have a machine that correctly goes to sleep overnight? Mine will sleep for an our or two and then not come up correctly. Switching to hibernate on lid close fixes it for now.
-
-
So, to me, it sounds like everyone who gets the studio 17 with an i7 cpu should do the following as soon as possible: 1)stress the machine, run benchmarks etc and check and make sure the temps are at an acceptable level 2) leave the machine on for several hours. Long enough to go into sleep and then hibernation mode for a while. See if it wakes up 3) leave it for several hours (overnight) on just sleep while plugged in, see if it wakes up 4) repeat step 3, but in hibernation mode only, skipping sleep mode.
These seem to be the common things that trigger the 7 beeps CPU failure. I know I will personally be doing all of those things repeatedly in the first couple weeks I have the computer. -
Got sound enabled by adding those lines to alsa-base.conf altho i notice the bass seems a little too much for my liking and there is no channel to play with like my ol inspiron 9100`s woofer (master mono it was). No prob for now, my trusty xmms+winamp preset does the trick nicely.
Also i found this in case you are interested..

Hi,
I am having a hard time searching this but are there XP (32 or 64) drivers for the 1745? I search this thread & winxp brings no results.
Thanks,
Rich -
I just got my laptop- studio 1745. I am very displeased with the monitor. Has anyone noticed the colors looking really washed out? And the screen being bright enough to burn your retinas? I dimmed the monitor, did a color configuration, and put in new drivers. No change. : / I called Dell - and was told that is just the way it is basically.
Also, is there a way to use the F keys without using the FN?
I am dissapointed as a whole with this pc. I think I might want to return it - but I am cranky about their stupid restocking fee and the shipping I have to pay. This sucks. It costed near 2000 with the extra hd and memory, etc. -
I believe you can change the F key assignments in the BIOS. Good luck! -
I complained about it being too bright, because when I turn it down, it darkens the colors out even more. I know I can dim it, and that is a nice feature.
It is the 900. The colors seem so off to me. light grays look like lavender... It seems like there is a white or gray haze over everything, -
I've just got one with the 900p screen and it's not a brilliant screen. The range of colours just isn't very large so if you have the blacks black then white are just a grey and if you brighten things up then the whites become off white and the blacks are dark grey.
I have a 1080p screen in an XPS 1645 and it's not a patch on that.
You can change the fn key status via the windows mobility centre. -
Did you pay for shipping? In the US sales will always give you free shipping for an item $599 or over. All you have to do is ask. They even do it for me to Alaska and it has to be sent 2nd day air and I've never had to pay to return a defective product. I just bought the nickelodeon Mini for my grandson and they shipped it free even though it was only $329.
Try moving the angle of the screen. You'll notice that as you move it back the colors improve on the lower half but it darkens out the top. Pull it forward and it washes out. It really is a crappy screen. The 1400x900 LED on the 1735 looks terrific. I've also got the Studio XPS 1640 here with the 900p screen and it is gorgeous. I was expecting the 1747 to look the same.
I agree about the brightness. They really screwed up with this one. -
Well mine had the 7 beeps of death for the second time this morning! Just got off the phone with tech support and they've agreed to give me a refund. Might buy again when they have sorted the problem. I did do this on purpose to see if I now had a good board.
So this is exactly what happened:
i7 720Qm bios A03
Lid closed at 23:30 - sleep mode
Woken up at 7:30 by fan running at 100% (laptop right next to bed)
Opened lid, media keys lit - nothing happened
Pressed power quickly - nothing happened
Held power - laptop turned off
Pressed power back on - Fan noise plus 7 x beeps
Weird that it was exactly 8 hours after lid was closed. -
I will try that and give it a few days to see if that happens when I get mine...problem is that it may run fine right until it's of warranty with my luck!!!I just don't have confidence in it even if it makes it past the infant mortality stage...hey on another topic have a great few days and pound some back and take down a bird or two...cheers everyone!!! only -4c here but a wack of snow coming...
-
anyone get a status update on when their 1745/47 with the LCD 1080P should arrive?
-
-
spoke with a manager because I have been waiting for my order since Dec 4th and no one can give me and EDD. I called again today 48 hours after they told me to call and still no estimate. If i don't hear anything back from them to at least get an EDD I will have no other choice but to call the BBB. -
I ordered mine on December, 5 and its still in production on the website. I'm really scared with all this sh... going on. I'm even more scared because I'm living in Toronto but in January I'll be moving back to Brazil and I didn't purchase the international warranty! Now I've been reading this post and the xps posts since the beginning and while a lot of people are having problems I believe a lot more are satisfied with the laptops and we cannot say it will happen to everybody. And since I can't find one that has everything that I want like the studio 17 I think I'll give it a chance if of course I receive it before I leave the country! So I read lots of people talking about the 130w power supply but I don't know which one exactly I have to buy. Could someone post the specific model please? I also found a 120w universal ac adapter from Kensington available at canada computers but they don't have much info on it so I don't know if it is compatible or not, has anyone tried it?
My order
Studio 17 core i7 820
6gb ram
1080p b+rg display
bluray combo
320gb hdd (will upgrade with a intel x25-m 80 gb that I just bought and love it btw!)
