That's some real good news.
I hope Dell will bring out also a new BIOS for the 1749 soon.

I was on the Dell Canada site and I am looking at purchasing the 1745, which on the site says it has 4 usb ports and pictures show it as such. However the reviews have people complaining that it only has two usb ports, and after visiting the USA site the model picture and tech spec list and show only 2 usb ports vs the Canadian 4. I spoke to a Dell Canada seller and he confirmed it did indeed have 4 usb ports. So what's the deal exactly, does it have 4 or 2, do they differ by country? Just trying to avoid sending the thing back when it shows up if it does not have 4 usb ports. Thanks in advance!

I have a 1747 which has 3 USB port, 2 on the right and one USB/eSATA on the left. Do not know if the 1745 and 1747 are the same?
-
so the case should be the same with 2 usb-ports on the right and one usb-/sata-port on the left site -
Ubuntu 10.4 x64 Dell New Studio 1747
Hi,
I have a Dell New Studio 17 Laptop. I have installed Ubuntu 10.4 x64.
Everything is working ok except the sound. I can listen sounds, but the quality is not good, in fact is really bad, for example to watch a movie with VCL player i have to use the "rock" filter for the sound to be clearer...
Is there anything i can do to improve the quality of the sound?
I also have windows 7, and the sounds are really good.
Thanks,
Antonio -

Not a huge deal, but about a week ago a small white dot appeared on my screen. You can only see it against a white background. It doesn't really bother me - and I'm definitely not going to ask for a screen replacement for such a small issue - but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do on my end. I've tried UDP Pixel and other programs that try to bring the pixel back to life by flashing various colors. I don't think it's a dead pixel because it's white...not black.

electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
If you press on it gently, does it flicker or pulsate? If so, you may be able to get rid of it via gentle massaging of the location. If it stays solid no matter what, you're most likely stuck with it.

There is a new BIOS (A11) on Dells Driver site.
I have installed it and run the laptop (1747 - i7) and it seems to be OK. -

Posted this elsewhere but I thought I'd put it here too. My computer has developed a few more "white spots" since I last mentioned the problem. Only one of these is visible when I stare at it directly; the other three spots can only be seen when you look at the screen from an indirect angle. Still, it's a little strange that these dots are multiplying. Anybody know of an explanation and what I can do to fix/prevent them?

I set my Studio 17(/w i7 720qm and 4650) with high performance setting and I notice it runs at 96%+ frequency all the time according to my resources monitor. I ran CPU-Z and notice it's at 21 multipliers all the time as it rarely falls to 20. It's running at 53~56c(10 FF tabs, foobar and wmp playing at the same time) and 65-70c when I game. Is this normal?
-
CpuZ dose not see the actual frequency, it only shows the max. I use RealTemp which shows the current frequency. My q720m normally stays at about 930mhz when idle.
-
According to my resources monitor, the freq is at 96%+ all the time so I believe my cpu-z is actually right.
My concern is that the multi does not fall down even when my machine is in idle. It runs at max freq all the time and thus giving me really high temps. -
I would use task manager to see if a process is using a core. Some of them are hidden so click "show processes from all users" button. If nothing is running you could try getting the Intel turbo gadgets and see what that displays.
This is a pic of Cpuz + RealTemp on my laptop:

Fred, I have one more question for you. When you double click the BIOS file does it install automatically without your consent? I wonder if that's normal? Thx.
-
I downloaded 1747A11_W32-64.exe from dell driver site and its an automated updater. When I ran it it opens a window that says its going to do the update and after about 30s a progress bar starts. The update takes about 2mins then I reboot. I also got a newer Intel chipset driver from Intels site. Give that a try and see if that helps.
-
Fred, do you have the link to that chipset driver? What does it do? Any improvement? Thx a lot.
-
I think it was from :
INF Update Utility - Primarily for Intel® 5, 4, 3, 900 Series Chipsets but I am not 100%. I have looked in my download folder and the file is the same so it should be it. -
Thx Fred.
Btw, did you apply an aftermarket thermal compound? What is your room temp? I noticed your temps are cooler than mine. -
I have a Cooler Master Notepal U2 laptop cooler but temps have not dropped much ~3-5 C at most but the finger pad feels allot cooler when games are running.
Normal idle temp are:
cold day = ~45C
hot day = 58C
Under load the max temp is about 75 - 82C.
The room temp is between about 18 - 25C I think (not tested).
The person that did ThrottleStop post on this forum, he seems to know about how the CPU frequency works. He may be able to help you find out whats happening. -
I would like to plug my laptop into my TV, however, my only options for inputs are S video or RCA. How do I accomplish this? I've searched everywhere for a cable that has HDMI on one end and S video on the other, but can't find them anywhere. Do they even exist? If not, then, does one exist for HDMI and RCA?

I just purchased a Studio 1747 with Windows 7 Home Premium and have noticed that all of the windows sounds are cutoff. You can use any sound scheme and the same thing happens. When you go into the sound settings and preview the windows sounds the first attempt is cutoff. Click preview sound again and it works perfectly. Wait a few minutes and try again and you get the exact same result. I have Soundblaster X-Fi MB installed and also the IDT high definition driver as well. I have the most current IDT driver that I downloaded from Dell. The version number is 6.10.0.6267. This problem happened fresh out of the box. I pulled my hair out trying to figure out what was causing the problem. I ended up doing a clean install of Windows 7 on my machine and when I installed the IDT driver the windows sounds started cutting out. If you uninstall the driver the Windows sounds are perfect. So obviously the IDT driver has a bug and I see other people have reported this problem since December 2009. If you remove the IDT driver the Sounblaster functions don't work. What amazes me is that Dell hasn't resolved this issue. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?
-
you can´t do anything against this... a known problem since the first days of Studio 1747. Dell support of course was informed about this "cutted sound" problem again and again, but until today nothing was happened... sorry for my rookie english.
