Make sure you also get the dell 6% student discount or quidco (6% at the moment I think) as you can also use them with the 5% discount coupons.
-
Yep, got a 5% off code and my Quidco 6% at the ready, though I'm not counting on Quidco tracking as they are a bit hit and miss.

did not delivered it...

I briefly had a 1747, after the first couple of days I didn't mind so much the intermittent fan. It was still quieter than my old laptop.
Today I managed to order 1749 i5-540m/4gb ram/9 cell battery/500gb hd/5650 gpu with multi touch screen, delivery date is estimated as 4th March 2010.
Good to read this laptop does not appear to throttle. -
nope, even with overclocked gfx, screen max brightness and usb hard drives attached it didnt throttle
-
I had to go and pick it up from UK Mail.
Looks nice, but the fan is a little bit annoying.
Will update with gaming results soon.
Wow it is very big -
Just a quick update:

I Think is really nice from a laptop. -
Suspicious that DELL ditched the Quad Core i7 in favor of the Dual Core i7 hmmm virtually confirms it to me about the problems with those 45nm Quad Cores. The 5650 GPU is nice but a 5830 would have been way better for not much more in watts 19wattsvs24watts. Its clear DELL really has a massive inventory of the 90 Watt Power supplies, and thats what they want to stick with on all their machines.
on a side Note
- No RGB LED 1920x1200 display
- No Bluray Drive
- No back Lit Keyboard
- No Intel 6300 or 5300 N WiFi or WIMAX
Nice to see DELL taking 4 steps back from a machine I bought in December 2008. Wake me up when DELL decides to starts making good laptops again.
USA!, USA!, USA!, USA!, USA!, USA!.. -
Mine has backlit keyboard!
-
In my case the 90 watt adaptor got very hot, above 70C (160F)on the surface, enough for cooking an egg.
Also I began experiencing system freezes two weeks ago after upgrading to BIOS A07, and needed to do hard reboots and therefore losing all my work.... and time.
I submitted complaints about the hot adaptor to the certifying UL agency, and told them the problem that DELL is using this low powered adaptor with a machine that sucks the juice out of it, and that they should use a 130 Watts instead.
I wrote to the DELL customer care here in Canada and telling the problems in this thread (throttling, system freeze, hot adaptor) and the problems aknnowledged by the Dell engineers on the DELL community forum thread.
They gave me right away a return number through UPS, and I am a waiting the full refund next week.
I am so glad to be free from this whole nightmare. Who needs to pay for a 2000$ computer and experience such amounts of problems ( esp. the system freeze, and the underpowered system which we got that was advertised to us as a powerful multimedia house).
Anyway, the agency wrote me back and wants a clear photo picture of the adaptor. Since I do not have anymore this laptop (!),could someone write to the agency below. As ma ny people complain, the faster action we will get through this official way.
You may forward your complaints to the certifier of the A/C adaptor below, since they are investigating the problem.
They answered me:
" Your report has been forwarded to me for handling. To assist us in investigating the reported issue, please provide me with photos of the marking labels on both the AC adaptor and the laptop, showing the UL Marks and the product designations for the AC adaptor and the laptop.
Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention and assisting us in maintaining the UL Public Safety Mission.

I recently purchased a Dell Studio 1749, Intel Core i5-520M, 2.40GHz, 4GB, DDR3, 1066MHZ, 500G w window 7 and I am having a lot of problems with the system locking up and crashing. The problem seem to occur when one user logs out and then another tries to log back in. I set the machine so it does not go into sleep and I am still having the problems. When sleep was active, the system would say it didn't have sufficient resources to log another account in (only second account). I updated all the drivers and removed that stupid Dell bar.
Additional it takes a very long time to boot up from a cold start.
All this is very frustrating for a brand new machine.
I feel like a beta tester. Please help! -

One thing that you won't see is 1920x1200 screens. Nobody is manufacturing those for non-business laptops and even in those it's becoming more rare (see new HP EliteBook series). Unfortunately it's the LCD manufacturers who are the culprit. They have all gone onto 16x9 bandwagon.
However, 1080P screen should be an option, even a non-RGB one ala Sony or Asus. Same with Blu-Ray, I am puzzled why Dell doesn't offer that, it could be simply that stocks are still low and they are channeling them to more expensive Alienware, XPS, Latitude and Precision lines.
Studio does have a backlit keyboard option, and I bet you will see Intel 6100 soon (when Dell runs out of its current stock). 6300 is triple antenna setup and that's rare on lower rung systems.
For the video card, at least a 5730 would have been welcomed, but even a 5650 is ok as long as cooling is there since it can be overclocked fairly well. Obviously 5830 would have been even better, but other then HP envy nobody has it, and Dell is relegating Studio 17 to it's "secondary" line so it can't have a better card then XPS 16. -
Well I've ordered my 1749 after some deliberation. Say what you want about Dell, you can't beat their buying power, couldn't get anywhere near this spec from any other manufacturer without spending another £150.

Hi everybody!
I just buy this 1749 Laptop. I wanted to add a second hard drive as Ninja2000 said in the first page of this forum. I look for a place to buy the cady and I found this one. I saw the video and I'm not sure it's the correct model, cause the connector seems different. May you of us confirm it? Or does anyone know where to buy a caddy for the second hard drive. -

What are Dell doing about the fan ramping up and down issue?
-
What happened to the 1920x1200 LCDs?
-
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
1920x1200 LCD's are going the way of the DoDo and are near extinct with the advent of HD proliferation via 720p (1366x768) and 1080p (1920x1080) screens.
In addition:
1680x1050 has been replaced by 1600x900 screens
1920x1200 has been replaced by 1920x1080 screens.
Only problem is Dell is only offering 1600x900 on their new 1749's and even the 1747's they are selling. Their 1920x1080 B+RG screens were discontinued awhile ago and I do fear the new 1749's will not support quad core CPUs (similar to the 1737's).
So if you want:
The better 1920x1080 B+RG screen (92% gamut)
Quad Core
You will have to track down a 1747.
Personally, if I had to choose, I'd prefer 1080p over 1200p simply for real 1080p support (no bars) and not such an extreme resolution.
I have a 1747 coming in Monday, and hopefully it fixes a lot of the all over the map issues with the RGBLED which, while very bright (B+RG and RGBLED are rated at 300nits which is just overkill for brightness), I and my bud who still has a 1737 w/ RGBLED and T9900 the reds are just too off and depending on what you're doing you find yourself loading up different icc's and many things look just too unatural especially for photo editing compared to my 30" Apple IPS screen. Then again, don't get me started on the 1737 with its insanely underpowered 3650 GPU, lol. -
Ah damn
I would hate to lose even more vertical screen space, at the moment i use zoom to fill the 16:10 screen with a 16:9 video, i lose a small strip of video on the slides but it looks a lot nicer.
I'm disappointed by this move, i don't watch many videos on my laptop, but i do value vertical screen space. Maybe i'll like it when i start using it -
-
I really like the 1080p B+RG screen, but if I had the choice I would have gone for 1200P for more resolution. That said, if you can get the 1080P screen, it's very nice. I have calibrated it a bit and don't have any issues with colors or red-push.
-
I've been hearing that the 1747 had blazing hot power bricks when the processor was under heavy load. Does the 1749 have those issues? I'm still going to buy one I'd just rather not whine to Dell until they give me a 130W adaptor
-
-
Well, I was determined to get a new Inspiron sometime this year, then I found a deal that would get me the Studio 1749 with great specs for just a couple hundred pounds more than what I wanted in the Inspiron. The deal went off early on the Dell UK site, and came back and went away again, so who knows if it will pop back up again. Apparently I need to be ready to buy if it does. This was the deal, fyi.
My concern is that I may not want it anyway after reading some of the problems on here. The fan sounds annoying and the hot power brick is worrisome, too. Any chance that by waiting those issues will be ironed out? About how long might that take? I'm in no rush, as my old laptop works fine, though I would enjoy a new one. -

Dell will, hopefully, replace your brick. If not, it is a $25 USD fix via eBay to order one or take it a step further and get a PA-15 (150W) adapter.
Basically, Dell needs to change the BIOS settings to have the fan set to low at all times for a nice rhythmic "whrrrrrr." -
Hello, I have ordered a Dell Studio 1749 with these specs:
Intel i5-540M
4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
1 GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
1TB (7,200rpm) Serial ATA Dual Hard Drive (2x 500GB)
6-Cells Battery
Price: $1257,90
What do you think of the setup for that price? Estimated delivery is 19th March, I hope I get it then or sooner. -
I think its a great spec for the price! I got the same spec as you (except I got a 500gb hard drive) for £760. Any comparable laptop from another company would have cost you a lot more I think. By the way, my laptop came 8 days after I placed the order, so you shouldn't have any worries about the delivery time.
-
My order is still at "processing order" after 9 days. Dell says that should take at maximum 5 days.. That's a little strange I think.
-
Still waiting for mine.
Had to reorder again because bank done security check on dell transaction.
Laptop will arrive on or before 17/3/2010 according to dell. -
3d mark 06 scores for my studio 1749 clock settings 650/950 1280 x 768
SM2.0 = 3161
HDR/SM3.0 = 3943
Will do a full test tomorrow and post results cpu temp was max 38c and gpu was 56c max
If anyone knows the upper limits of the 5650 it would be greatly appreciated -
My Dell Studio 1749 is on the way now, ETA 1 april.
-
Got my 1749 today with Multi Touch.
i5-540m/4GB Ram/Ati 5650/500GB 7200rpm/9 Cell Battery/Multi Touch/4 year warranty
Performance info:
Processor 6.8
Ram 5.9
Graphics 6.7
Gaming Graphics 6.7
Hard Disk 5.9
When have time will check out Multi Touch performance when working in admin area script, hopefully it will be an improvement over the mouse. -
OK this may be a silly question, but where on the dell site do I tell if it is a 1747 or a 1749? I have put together a i5 520 system that I think I want to buy, but after reading alot I deffinitely want a 1749 over a 1747.
Edit: These are the two I am currently considering.

Are both of these 1749? I think I like the first one better because of better video card, too bad cant get a core i7 with that video card. -
The 1749 is for the dual-core Arrandales like the 520M, 540M and 620M. The 1747 is for the quads like the 720QM and 820QM.
-
Thanks, looks like I will be going with option 1, I figured out I can get 3% off with dell Preferred account so I was able to add backlit keyboard and upgrade to the 9 cell battery and stay under $1500.
-
Got my 1749 (540m,5650,1TB) now, works great so far!

Really impressed with 1749 and the touch screen functionality.

I think it's not such a bad deal.
The only thing that worries me is the fan issue. I hope Dell will solve this soon. Otherwise I'm afraid my wife will be not so pleased with her present after all. -
Folks, you can now order the 1749 with a 1920 x 1080 screen. At least I was able to do so after asking the sales rep about it. It's not listed as an option on either of the the Norwegian or US websites though.
The bad part is that my new toy will take a month to arrive. I the mean time I need to find out how to do a cooling upgrade with some shims and paste...
-- -
-
To my understanding 1600 x 900 is a bit much for the latest games on a 17xx anyway, and if things are going to be scaled it'll look better on an even higher res screen...
It took me a few months to land on this choice; been waiting for the full HD screen. In the end I gave up the elusive search for the perfect laptop and settled for a pretty good one
BTW, the config is it i5 520M, 4GB RAM, 1TB HD, ATI 5650 and the Wireless-N card. I'm considering whether I should go with a faster CPU, but after reading abut these Dell models I fear that heat and fan-noise will become more of an issue.
