Hi,
recently received a Dell 1749. I am happy except one - the lid sort of drops down when its about an inch into closing.
Is it normal ?. Please share your thoughts.

I just got my 1749 with two 500GB hdd, Can i install RAID 0 on my notebook?
If yes, what do I need to do to install it?
many thanks! -
As far as I know you can not. There's no RAID controller.
-
I love mine, but I see on dell site you can get it now with the 1080p screen for the same price as I paid for mine with the 1600x900 screen about a month ago! Argh! Oh well.

so what does this new bios A04 do?
it's the 2nd time now that they release a "performance enhancement". Does it change anything? -
Did someone try this bios v.04? I'm not eager to try what our Dell broddlers made this time. -
hairdryer update
Just installed the new BIOS A4. Same fan problem.Log in and all is quiet. Fire up the internet and it sounds like you are in a hairdressers salon. Dell have asked me to return the laptop.
Note to others . The sound was neglible when first i bought it around a month ago. Beware , it becomes increasingly annoying.
Comments regarding the screen
Great screen as long as you are looking dead on :S
I so wanted to love my laptop. Is there a smilie for a broken heart ? -

Stop you're killing me! Also the color. A pink Dell hairdryer... -
Hey all
Despite all the hairdryer problems that some people have mentioned, i'm very close to pulling the trigger on purchasing the 1749.
However, here in the UK i've noticed this week dell is now offering the 1080p screen option for an extra £80.
According to the dell sales rep it is only the WLED 1080p screen not the RGB one, so im wanting to know if anyone has had the oppurtunity to compare how this screen compares with the 900p one in terms of viewing angles, colour contrasts etc.
Also, i'm primarily going to be using the laptop for gaming; Cod WM2, flight sim x etc, and have read from previous posts that the ati 5650 hasn't quite got the " umphh" to run games smoothly at 1080p resolution, so in this respect would i be better off with the 900p screen??
Cheers for your help -
When compared with B+RG auo149d, 900p screen is a no-go.
Look for the side-by-side comparison photos near the end of this review page:
Notebookcheck.pl: Recenzja Dell Studio 1747
Ensure the 1080p that comes with 1749 is at least an auo149d. -
Viewing angles certainly look a lot better on the 1080p screen.
But I still doubt the practicality of a 1920x1080 17.3 inch screen. The text looks so small. -
I prefer more the 17" 1920x1200 size of my M1730 gaming rig.
For work I use my Latitude D830 with the 15,4" 1680x1050 WSXGA+ screen. Text here is also tiny. For some colleges it's too small indeed.
If I sometimes take place behind the Inspiron 1720 with 17" 1440x900 everything looks really massive. -
Text is indeed small. At the same it is crisp and sharp. Very good contrast and viewing angle makes reading easy. I use a lot of syntax highlighting. To me that means productivity.
-
I kinda wished that I had read about this before I placed an order for one. The comments that I am reading comparing the fan to the sound of a hairdryer is a little bit bothersome (but the questions is, is the sound from the fan comparable to a hair dryer on high?) Other than that, everyone who has it are you satisifed with it or would you recommend another 17" dell that you would purchase?
-
Regarding the hairdryer like sound, I had a little experience. When I was splitting and creating more partitions in dos mode, the fan drove at full speed and produced near hairdryer sound.
When it was done and went into Win7, I never noticed any fan sound, except when I have my ear within an inch from air vent, I can hear the fan is running. A tip I got is to turn the cooling of CPU to "passive" in Win7.
I am using a 1747 though. -
In my case I like the power of the i7 620M CPU. Hell, it's even more powerful than my X9000 Extreme CPU in my XPS M1730.
If you're not a hardcore gamer the HD 5650 is good to go. It can make Settlers 7 with it's crappy engine run smooth @ everything high.
And don't forget the JBL sound system with its sub-woofer. It gives you a nice clear sound. I can only think of the XPS M1710 back in the old days which had something familiar.
If the 900p LED screen is not a big issue to you, you're good to go. -
Yeah, I got it from the outlet so if I'm not happy with it, back to the outlet it goes so someone else can get it, lol. The only other thing is that when I was looking on there last night, the only graphics card was the Intel HD graphics. Being I don't play games much I went ahead and picked it up anyways, so we will see.
-
Well I got my laptop today from the Outlet, however it's going back. As much as I tried I could not get used to having the integrated graphics, being this laptop is going to be lasting me for awhile. So I found another one at the outlet that has the same specs, same price, however I lose the 9-cell battery, which isn't too bad because it's going to stay plugged in 3/4ths of the time and I also lose the backlit keyboard which really I was kinda upset about, but more I think about it, it's not a big deal really. The biggest thing was that I was able to get the ATI 1gb card, which is a big deal to me, lol.
-
The HD 5650 is a decent card. Also the combination with an i-Core CPU makes it a laptop you can use a long time. -
To anyone who got the 6-cell battery with their studio, does the back still raise up a little bit in the back?
-
^ The bottom sits flat on the table (lap?). However, the base is wedge shaped, ca. 30mm high at the back and ca. 23mm at the front.

And that is with the 6 cell right? If so that is what I was looking for.
-
Ugh. How long did it take your guys' to get out of "In Production!?" been there for 12 going on 13 days now. Expected delivery date June 4th, yeah, sure.
-
Be patience. -
I think they merged "In Production" with boxing, as it just shipped today. It will make no movement on Sun/Mon obviously, but, they re-updated the EDD and it's still 6/4/2010. Perfect date. Here's hoping.

Does anyone know if the fan issue has been fixed yet ?
-
The BIOS A04 didn't solve the issue. So I skipped this one. However I heard a version A05 is coming out soon and maybe with a fix for this. So fingers crossed.... -
Thanks for the reply.
I hope Dell manage to fix the problem soon, as i can't find any other laptop that meets my criteria:
Min. 17", 1920 * 1080 screen
Intel i5/i7 CPU
4 GB DDR3 RAM
7200 RPM disk, space for 2 pcs. ( will be adding a SSD disk later)
GPU good enough for gaming.
The only other machine i've found is the ASUS G73JH,but it costs 3300$ i Norway, the Studio 1749 cost 1750 us$ here.. -
Im also considering the Studio 1749, i noticed that the screen is 1920x1080, but will the color and brightness be the same as the 1920x1080 in the Studio XPS 16 ?
It seems like the XPS has RGB and Studio 1749 doesnt ? Is that right ?
Im not buying another laptop until i find a FullHD screen with the same beautiful screen as Xps 16.
the only reason i dont buy the XPS is because of its lack of numeric keys on the right side. -
Can anyone tell me what speed the HD 5650 runs at on the Studio 17? I know this gpu has a variable speed that the manufacturer can decide, and I've done a quick search on this but no luck yet. Also, why isn't the 5650 in the i7 quad models yet? That really sucks
I'd like to compare the HD 5650 in the Studio 17 to the HD 5730 that's in the SXPS 16 now.
edit2: Re-read thread from beginning and found it. Search didn't work :| Anyway, the 5650's core speed is 550/800 and it appears overclocks to 600/900 have been easy to achieve. Would be nice to get to 650 since that's AMD's upper limit for the chip, and it would be a closer competitor with the 5730.
edit: to solsviken, the 1080p B+RG LED screen is a variation on the RGB LED in the SXPS 16, and it's also awesome. Several people have stated they prefer the Studio 17 Screen over the SXPS 16 screen - their opinion, but worth knowing. -
Thx for the reply Iceman, but it seems like the selection i have only state the following:
"17,3-tommers LED-skjerm med full-HD (1920 x 1080) og TL "
translated to english:
"17,3 inch LED-screen with Full-HD and TL"
Is this a new cheaper version since it does not include RGB or B+RG in the name ? -

1 320-8968 17.3 in FHD TL RGBLED Display w/cam
This is the screen that's coming with my 1749. I copied this straight from my order description. I wouldn't have bought it unless it was an RGB LED 1080p screen. -
oki, just took a check.
Went in to the "d ell .com" site, there I can see it stands RGB LED screen, but not from dell.co.uk and dell.no (norway, were i live).
This means that the RGB screen just isnt available for us in Europe.
Bahh.... annoying, i almost found the laptop ive been searching for, but the screen is so important that I dont want to order without the RGB LED. -
Lexington Talionis Notebook Enthusiast
Oh. I could have sworn I read somewhere that the RGB LED was available in Europe. Maybe I'm wrong about that. If it isn't right now, it should be within a month or two. It just became available here in the past month.
-
Guess i just have to wait then, annoying.
-
It could be that they just haven't got all the details in the description. They are known to leave out information at times. I'd get on the phone and find out for sure. This could be the machine you want, and you just need to confirm it.
-
Just talked to them on the chat, seems to be the WLED screen

With that being said, I've owned both (XPS 16 RGBLED / 1747 B+RG), and I actually preferred the B+RG. Less glossy, less intense reds, same insane nit rating (300) and excellent picture quality on par with the RGBLED.
Still curious to see if you get the B+RG. -
Electrosoft; i guess the B+RG screen is something diffrent from WLED again?
Called the dell support, and they said the Studio 17 in norway get delivered with a WLED screen.
So basically, there is three screens (correct me if i am wrong):
WLED
B+RG LED
RGB LEd

It would be a little disappointing to not get what I thought I was going to get, though. I don't like being mislead even if the display is nice. Not that I'll complain, I just don't like the ol' bait and switch. -
electrosoft Perpetualist Matrixist
WLED = 1600x900 6-bit panel
B+RG = 1920x1080 6-bit panel 92% gamut
RGBLED = 1920x1080 6-bit panel 100% gamut
Having seen a WLED and B+RG side by side, the difference is very pronounced image wise.
The B+RG is definitely nice. Like I said, I had an SXPS 16 RGBLED and the 1747 in my sig for a week while I decided which one to keep. I ultimately ended up choosing the 1747, as the screens were on par with each other. -
You have to bear in mind that Dell don't always know what they're doing or talking about...

So what is the deal with a TV Tuner? The pictures show an antenna connection for an (optional) internal TV Tuner, but there is no TV Tuner option in the configurator and no mention of it in the specs.
-
Lexington Talionis Notebook Enthusiast
The TV tuner was an option when I was customizing mine on the Dell site. You can get it with the integrated graphics and if you upgrade to the ATI 5650, it comes with it. There's no option to get the 5650 without the TV tuner.
This is the link I used to customize my Studio 17.
The Dell Online Store: Build Your System
However, I've read on various other forums and reviews that people are having a hard time figuring out what kind of antenna it takes. Some people seem to say that the antenna doesn't come with the laptop. Others say it does. I don't know. I'll report when I get mine. It's supposed to be here Friday. It's currently "in transit" according to the FedEx tracking site. It's in Atlanta, GA and I'm in Tampa, FL so it should definitely make the deadline. -
Hey Dell, you can hire me to clean up this mess globally!
