New Dell-Laptop

Hi guys,

I just got informed, that my company wont buy a notebook for me if you can't order it from Dell.
After i decided to go for the x220 or Vaio Z I'm now stuck, because I know more or less nothing about DELL products (tough I can see their great service).
Further it seems hard to find any reviews about Dell products.
Maybe you guys can help me out? I'm looking for a notebook with following specs:
- 12" - 13"
- good AND matte screen - a resolution of 1600x900 would be prefered
- good batterylife (7h+ real life usage) - I'm ok with bulkier ext. batterys
- HDMI/DVI/DP offering min. 1920x1080 resolution
- good keyboard (altough i think businessclass notebooks have them all) - backlit keyboards are prefered
- not too loud, not too heavy, good buildquality (doesn't have to be rocksolid like thinkpads)

Right now I'm using an iMac for my work (Inte Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz), I'd like some more power, a turboboost sandy bridge i5 would be nice.
4Gig's of RAM are enough for the moment.

Any ideas? I know i can search models myself by going on dell.com, but it's hard to find out something about real battery life, screen quality and noise..

The higher specs xps series would do fine. Alienware has a new 14 inch laptop. Not sure if you are in to that.

 

XPS only comes in 15" and up. Dell is woefully short of small laptops this year. The business line (Vostro and Latitude) is your best bet, but you won't get any resolution higher than 1366x768 there.

Try Latitude E6320 / Vostro 3350 or Vostro V130 if you're budget conscious

 

Dell doesn't currently make any consumer laptops in the 12-13" range at all. There is a rumor of an ultra-slim 13" high end consumer laptop coming out later this month, so if it's not urgent and you can wait, follow it here:

I just had a talk with our IT-Department and they showed me the Latitude e6320.
It offers all the goodys you need for your day-to-day work, except, but that's more a non-sony but a dell-only problem, the high-res screen.
So I'm stuck with that shabby HD-Ready resolution.
The build quality is fine, theres a backlit keyboard option and there are loads of options to max out the battery life.
There's a 3-cell, 6-cell and 9-cell battery (tough he they weren't sure about that 9-cell thing), a battery-slice and the possibility to swap out the dvd drive for an additional 3-cell battery.
That swap is not more than a button press to release the optical drive, so it's a nice thing to have.

It's not the Vaio Z with the build quality and the battery life of a Lenovo X220, but I think I'll be fine with that Latitude.

 

I just bought a new Dell laptop (a few months ago). I like Dell but the fan runs and runs and runs. To reason but it's a distraction!
