I recieved my e1405 yesterday, not bad when I ordered in Last Friday night..practically 5 days!! Anyways, I open it up and it is better than I expected. With all the depressing comments about this thing over the boardsI didnt think I would like it, but the build and appearance is definately good. After I removed all of the bloatware, this thing ran like a charm, and picked up wireless networks great.... BUT
I noticed the light leakage but I definately had no problem with it, I came from a Samsung 171 V desktop LCD (4 years old) So everything looked pretty decent. Although, there is a really annoying screen sparkle or shimmer as some refer to it. It is noticeable on light colored backgrounds which makes whites look greyish and grainy.
I chatted with Dell Support online, they said that this issue is a coincedence and asked me to send the unit into the Dell Depot. Rather I asked them to send a replacement LCD and I will install it myself. Anyways, I have an AUO screen with the WXGA + (glossy) and hopefully the new unit does not contain this sparkle issue ( I can deal with light leakage)
BTW, Are these screens hard to install? and does dell send me just the LCD or do they send the whole screen apparatus (bezel, cover, etc)
Thanks Guys! Great laptop, shame that it is "hit or miss"
PS...Sorry one last word....My dad has an e1505 that he recieved a month ago he has the LG screen and the colors are much deeper on my AUO, and he said that he is disappointed that he didn't get the 14.1" inch version because it really is a big difference from the 15.4" but somehow viewing isn't greatly affected
Cheers!

They don't send you the bezel, you take yours off and pop the panel out. Then just reinstall the new one. And good luck because l have a samsung screen and there is a sparkle effect but l don't pay attention to it.

what this sparkle mean ?
is it something related to the frequency of the screen ( refresh rate ) or its just the wihites are too much? -
If you go to a white or light colored screen, the light colors appear "dirty". Some people descirbe it as seeing grainy and greyish mixed with white....This issue happened a lot with old CRT's. Put it this way, if I had not read about this problem, it wouldn't have been a problem
Because some peoples eyes really cannot pick it up i.e (My dad didnt see it, my mom did..)
-
oh i know what you're talking about now. I used to see the same problem on my CRT monitor - it was grainy.
Do you know does the shimmer/sparkle matter can be also visible on Matte screen or its seen on TrueLife and Matte Screen too. -
Most of the cases I heard are with the glossy screen (Truelife)...I am guessing that it has something to do with the coating the put over the screen.
-
My AOU screen has light leakage (as I've described in other threads) but no sparkle.
Overall, I like the screen quality quiet a bit.
Good luck with replacing yours. -
Jeff, Is yours the truelife screen?
-
Yes, with glossy finish and all.

Thought you guys might get a laugh out of this one
When they sent out my replacement LCD screen (mind you they sent JUST the LCD) There was an invoice prepared on my Dell Account for the replacement part and the total was $ 410.07 !!!!!! For the WXGA+ LCD ...lmao
I would like to know how Dell prices out the rest of the laptop
In other words if I don't send back the broken LCD...im down 400 -
hehe Thats just the Screen!
How are you going to replace it now? -
You pop out the grey plastic that was the power button. Theres a little notch that a screwdriver can fit in to pop it out. You need to take out the keyboard to get to the LCD connection thingy. You pop out those rubber things around the LCD panel. Unscrew, and pry it apart. Unscrew the LCD, take it out, replace it.
At least thats how I remember the Dell guy doing it on my 1505. I saw him do it 3 times. -
3 times... I was hoping one is going to solve it
On that note, I am completely used to my screen now, the sparkle doesnt even bother me, but oh well the replacement arrives tommorrow, I will try it out...will let you guys know!
WISH ME LUCK -
did you guys try to do a video card driver update? FROM DELL..not the vid card manufacturer...
-
I think most people who are complaining are complaining about it right out of the box. And, there isn't an update from the drivers it ships with...
-
The image/sparkle/grainy image/ dirty white.... Doesn't move on the screen, if you scroll the sparkle stays in place, ruling out software/drivers etc.
New E1405 :) Screen :(
