I just got an E1405 with a 100GB HD. I have not installed anything on it yet and I looked at the size of my C drive and it says I have a 87GB HD with 78.8 GB of usable space. Is this typical for this size drive with a Dell notebook? If I do a fresh install will it make very much difference?

Yea, rem you have a partition drive too which Dell has all the restore stuff on etc. So the rest is prob on that backup partition. =)

most harddrives aren't exactly the number it says. I'm sure you know this though. I have a 160gb harddrive, but in actual space its 153gb. It's just what sounds better. 153 or 160? We like the nice big round numbes. 2048mb or 2 gb?

Hard drives are measure in bytes thats why windows shows it differently. Like a 200,000 byte drive shows up as 183gb or something like that

I don't think it is the restore, I think it is the Dell MediaDirect stuff, aka the software that lets you play DVD's without turning the notebook on. From the E1405 page:

"Next Generation Dell MediaDirect puts your videos, music and photos at your fingertips. With the computer off, one press of the MediaDirect button will allow you to play videos, music or photo slideshows stored on the hard drive, optical drive, a USB key or from the integrated 5-in-1 media card, without starting Windows."

From the 630m, MediaDirect took up 1.3GB when I reinstalled it.

My e1405 won't be here until next week, but I wanted to know how many partitions are there on the 100 GB HD. From what I've read, there are 4 partitions: Diagnostics, MediaDirect, Restore, & C:/. I'm guessing only the C:/ is visible and the rest are hidden. Is this correct?

That's correct, the others are hidden
