bump. Has anyone tried using Intel's stock (and newer) drivers? 14.20 is the newest one for 945GM graphics (e1405). Dell's are much older. But Intel's do not work (14.20).

What drivers does everyone else use?

You will need to uninstall the stock driver, reboot, then install the new driver.

The version on Dell's support site is 6.14.10.4446 and Intel say their version is 14.20.0.4543.

Is the 14.10.446 part of Dell's details the corresponding Intel version number, therefore an older driver?

Dell uses its own "modified" version of the Intel chip driver; not so much that it's different from the Intel version of the same number, but in that it does require a bit of work to update to the Intel set versus the Dell's.

As duffyanneal said, in order to use the Intel drivers, it requires that the old Dell drivers first be removed, then the Intel ones be installed. Just trying to install the Intel drivers over the Dell drivers won't work.

Dell tends to update their drivers less frequently than the official ones from Intel, so you'll find more recent updates from Intel than you would Dell.

Hmm good advice guys, I'll do it. Why would Dell rebrand its drivers?

Are getting them from Intel better than waiting/getting them from Dell?

Also, if I uninstall the Dell video drivers first, will m graphics card even work (so that I can see and install the new drivers)?

Dell probably modifies the drivers so that it is hardware specific and user friendly. There are some options available on the Intel drivers that aren't available with the Dell drivers. Fewer settings = fewer questions from consumers = easier job for tech support.

Not necessarily. Most of the time Intel will even recommend that you go w/ Dell's Drivers. From Intel:
" OEM Supplied Versus IntelĀ® Generic Software
It is recommended that you obtain and use the software provided via your laptop manufacturer.

IntelĀ® is a supplier of laptop components and does not manufacture or sell complete laptop systems. The software provided by Intel below is a generic version. Each laptop computer original equipment manufacturer (OEM) may have altered the features, incorporated customizations, or made other changes to the software or software packaging they provide. The software provided has not been verified by your laptop manufacturer as to compatibility or other operation.

Intel or the laptop computer original equipment manufacturer (OEM) may not provide technical support for some or all issues that could arise from the usage of this software.
    "

As long as you don't uninstall your monitor, everything'll be okay. You'll just be using a lower resolution until you install the new drivers.

Wow thanks for all the help j4y! You did provide the same link I did though a couple posts back. So what did you use, in light of what you said, the Intel or Dell drivers?

Because I install the drivers after a new installation of Windows, I just install the Intel drivers. If you already have the Dell drivers installed, I don't know if it's worth the trouble to uninstall & then install the Intel drivers. Although I use the Intel drivers, I've personally never used any of the extra options that are included.

There are some people out there who claim that the Intel drivers are faster than Dell's modified version. I don't notice any difference, nor have I seen any benchmarks that prove this. So I don't see any point to uninstall your current drivers unless you want the option of conifguring 3D settings.

If you install Intel's drivers, where can the extra options be found; are they under Control Panel\Display?

I'd like the ability to adjust the gamma and/or color settings. Can't do that with the Dell drivers. What about Intel?

There is a Color Correction tab that lets you adjust the gamma, contrast & brightness. Once you get the Intel drivers installed, just right click on you desktop and go to graphic properties. You can double check to see if it's available w/ the Dell drivers too, might save you some trouble.
