They work fine for me. Check Device Manager -> Mouse ->Touchpad settings. Mine were off at default too.

The touchpad is not working again. Even after applying those drivers. I have restored the laptop to factory settings, to windows 8. The touchpad is still not working properly. I think this is a hardware issue now. I am reloading the lastest windows 8 patches in the hopes it starts working again. But I suspect it will have to go back to amazon. It's a shame because i really liked the form factor of this 11 inch laptop.

Did a memory and hard drive upgrade on mine
Used a GSkill F3-1333C9S-8GSL 8GB SODIMM and it works fine.
SSD drive is a Crucial M500 120 GB unit 7mm high. -
Had to do a BIOS update (now at A05) to get the SSD installation to work properly.
Installed Windows 7, as the person I am setting this up for hates Win 8
So far everything seems to be fine except still trying to locate a USB driver. -

Does the HDMI out work OK to full HD 23" monitor? When at home, I am planning to connect this laptop to monitor and keyboard/mouse to use as PC.
Will the performance be OK for this setup? -
-
Sure it does HDMI well enough. Only thing I will recommend is that you buy either the 4 GB version or an 4 GB ram module at least.

Just bought the Dell Inspiron 11 3138. Looks like it is shipping with a different processor from before, the "Intel Celeron Dual Core processor N2815 (1M Cache, 2.13 GHz)". This version comes with 4 GB RAM. I got it for $293 at dell.com.
-
It says it comes with x3 usb ports, but does it have a usb 3.0 port?
-
So I got the laptop last week. Really happy with the size and battery life. I will be advising people to get this laptop instead of tablets.
-
Looking at perhaps getting this laptop. Right now, Best Buy has an AMD A6-1450 version for $309 and via Dell's site, they have an Intel Celeron N2815 for $299 (after a $50 coupon). Other than that, the laptops seem to have the exact same configuration. The comparison on cpu-world for those two CPUs point to the AMD being the better choice. Thoughts?

This is pretty interesting miss the backlight keyboard :/ will see if i get one still thinking if it worth it or if i Send all Buck on a alienware 14-17
-
I am probably going to get one f these myself, and will play more with it, I suspect hunting around for a newer Win 7 compatible chipset drive would do the trick. -
Glad to see lots of others are enjoying this laptop too.
Interesting that Dell finally upped the ante and added more powerful Pentium 3556U and Celeron N2815 options, both with 4GB RAM. Kinda kicking myself that I paid $379 for the original 2955U/2GB model back in the day as one of the early adopters, but I wanted to have a new laptop for the new school year.
Trackpad issues: I have also experienced the random erratic trackpad dysfunction--it might start jumping around unpredictably when I touch it, register click-drags when I'm not, etc. I figured out it was due to STATIC ELECTRICITY buildup inside the laptop. You can Google and find a Dell support article on "flea power" (what Dell officially calls it), and you would typically wanna remove battery and power plug and hold down the power button to discharge it, but since the battery is integrated (not removable), we can't do that with this model. What I've found to work is to power it down and let it sit for a couple minutes. Unplugging and replugging it into the wall seems to allow the "flea power" to discharge as well. -
Just talked with a dell rep and he said the battery is removable and will be in the shop soon.. Can you disemble it and check for me guy? im going to run this laptop to death so if the battery is not removable im in crap..
Touchpad is strange on my vostro 3550 too...
And how is the onboard sound card????? -
ah and the old 2955U is stronger than the n2815 in cpu benchmark be alot
-
Is there usb 3.0 on this? From videos and screenshot pics, the usb ports all look black and not the usual blue color.
-
I'm interested in getting the inspiron 11 with the 3556U 1.7ghz Pentium chip. Will this along with 4gb of ram be sufficient to run windows 8 without any lag? My main uses will be web browsing (using Chrome), video streaming, media downloads, and using Reason 5.0 for some music production.
Will this configuration provide me with a fluid, speedy experience? -
HDMI™ 1.4a, Multi-media Card Reader, USB 3.0 (2), USB 2.0 (1), RJ-45 10/100/1000, Security slot
if that can help you yea there 2 usb 3.0 -
So the 2 black labeled usb ports on the leftside are usb 3.0? -
yea
(Normally they are blue but because of the colour of the laptop they probably choice black

Would somone be able to run the final fantasy 14 benchmark on laptop/low presets out of curiosity to see what the celeron can do ?
-
Can someone with the Celeron N2815 please run a Passmark test and post results? Also some one with the 3556u too. I would like to see a comparison of the two processors before purchasing and want to see if the extra $50 is worth the cost of the Pentium.
Thanks -
Holy fenix the pentium is definetely worth it he have more power than the current laptop im one right now ahah pentium t4500 core 2 gen 35w cpu..
my current cpu is about 1300 passmark and im reaching often 50+% cpu while browsing ( gpu offload on the cpu still i think
get the pentium PassMark - Intel Pentium 3556U @ 1.70GHz - Price performance comparison
the celeri PassMark - Intel Celeron N2815 @ 1.86GHz - Price performance comparison -
I am typing this on the N2815 variant I received yesterday and... I don't know about Passmark or gaming benchmarks, it's pretty pokey. For what I use it for (Word, OneNote, Chrome, Gmail, Facebook) it's up to snuff, but the CPU spends most of its time pegged at 100% usage. Probably should've spent the extra $50 for the Pentium, but I'd hoped the Celeron might give better battery life, and I'm using it toward a new card for the XPS 8700 I bought in the same order. So far looks to be 7-8 hours so about the same. Don't get me wrong - for ~ $295 this is a great system, but it is not powerful. I haven't bothered installing Steam on it, I'll put it that way. YouTube is often choppy.

i said to get the pentium the pentium spin arround the celeron like a lambo
and battery life your cpu is at 100% of it power comsumption vs a more powerfull cpu that will work less so you lose battery life -
PassMark PerformanceTest - PC benchmark software
So far it does seem like the Pentium is worth it though. They both have the same amount of RAM but I'm seeing a lot of people with the Pentium raving about it. Still I just want to be sure -
Pentium Haswell and 4gb of ram for $399 at Dell site is definitely recommended.
Btw, how's the keyboard on this? Does it have any flex? Does it have fn+mute etc... -
Hi I'm looking to buy this laptop to replace my 5 year old sony laptop that just died. I have a few question for people that have it if you don't mind
1. How many memory slots does it have?
2. How Glossy is the screen?
3. Can you add an SSD drive?
4. And in regards to questions 1 and 3 how easy is it to add memory and new hard drive?
I don't want to tear apart the laptop keyboard just to get to the memory or hard drive slots. I can get it with the Pentium for about $400 shipped. I want to add a 120GB Samsung Evo drive and 8GB of crucial 12800 ram. Thoughts
Thanks.... -
7mm ssd
Just get the pentium the celeron is back in the p4 era..
Of what i remember ram and hdd are easy to access.
1 slot of ram just get the default ram (i think 4gb 1333 more than enough im currently on ubuntu with 12 tab open and steam with less than 3gb load.... about 50 75% about the same on windows 7 on a hp cq56
I dont own the laptop i need something more powerfull if i buy something.. Lenovo Edge or 11.6 thinkpad -
Sure thing, I will download and run the test in the next hour, just wrapping some things up on the system. Battery life and responsiveness are great, so for my use case this is enough. But videos stutter (haven't tried Modern UI Hulu/Netflix yet, but assume those will work fine). I also have a Surface RT, and I'd say this is roughly 40-50% more responsive/faster with the benefit of full Windows 8.1. FYI I have the 4GB configuration with the N2815, it was $299 on President's Day weekend and then I got an additional few percent off through discounts, but not much. Compared to my old Dell Mini 10 this thing is a Cadillac.

CPU Mark - 860.5
2D/3D - 142.8/126.2
Memory - 490.4
Disk - 764.4
Videos stutter on YouTube, Vimeo, etc. Most will play almost completely smoothly. I use it for Chrome and Office mostly and am pretty happy for price paid and battery life.
I can run passmark on my desktop i7 4770 after I install this GTX750Ti for comparison's sake. If this were my only computer I would spring for the Pentium, but for under $300 with reasonable expectations you can't go wrong. -

I went ahead and ordered the Pentium version. I also ordered some Crucial 8GB memory and a 120GB M500 Crucial SSD.

Pretend I don't know anything...
If I want to upgrade to a SSD, what am I looking for. 2.5" 7mm; anything else?
Do I have to clone the disk, or can I just install the disk and do a system restore off a usb drive? -
system restore is supposate to work on a ssd pretty well and clone work too if you have an external hdd or big usb key..
And the guy that upgraded to 8gb im laughing you just spend 100$ for nothing...
bf4 maxxed out on my desktop with 64 player use 4gb except that nothing come to load my 4gb... and im on 1333mhz ram
my fx 6300 destroy this poor inspiron and my 7950 is not even worth comparing ahah...
4gb is more than enough for this kind of laptop
the only reason the ram upgrade is worth it is on a gaming laptop and work with i5 i7 up
or amd apu mobile that benefit from higher clocked ramJet Life likes this. -
Hey guys, I just wanted to give some info on the 3138 I've had for about two weeks now. Short story - it is awesome! I can't believe I got a touchscreen laptop with over 8 hours of battery life for $300.
I have the Celeron N2815 version with 4gbs of RAM and a traditional (non-SSD) hard drive. I haven't upgraded anything yet, but I did delete all the partitions, reformat the drive, and reinstall 8.1 from a USB I had. This thing flies for everything I use it for - web browsing, email, lots of Win8 apps, word processing, watching youtube vides, etc. I have 0 complaints with the performance (although obviously you won't want to run any super advanced programs or games on this.
I have noticed no stuttering with video at all, but this might be because I did a clean install - I hate the way OEM's put so much crap on new PC's. If you do decide on a clean install, however, be ready to work to find drivers. Most laptops these days will find almost all the drivers automatically through Windows Update. This one, however, hound nothing at all hardware specific to Dell. I even had to hook up an Ethernet cable as it didn't detect the wireless card. Speaking of which, the wireless driver was really hard to find, as the 3138 page only has Win 8 drivers, not 8.1. This causes some of them to not install on an 8.1 machine. For the wireless card, I used the 8.1 driver for the 3137 and it seems to work fine - I think it's the same 1705 wireless card in both machines.
After trying to install every driver I could think of I still have two unknown devices. Hopefully Dell will fix the 8/8.1 driver problem soon, but even with those two unknown devices, I absolutely love this machine. While some people complained about the 3137, the updated Celeron and 4gbs of RAM makes this machine perfect. I'm sure the Pentium would be even better, but I got a deal on the Celeron version and didn't want to spend the extra money.
And one last thing - I don't know if they fixed the trackpad or just got better drivers or what, but the trackpad works perfectly. I have had no problems after installing the Dell driver. -
-
A clean install isn't necessary though, I'm just OCD about it. I'm sure the Pentium will be fine - so long as you uninstall the McAfee and any other programs you don't think you'll ever use. -
