very very interesting.... looks to be like a viable (hopefully cheap as it is an inspiron) laptop that despite being dual core can replace the XPS 1521 which hasn't or may not be refreshed

ps---- I BLOODY HATE TOUCH SCREENS......I HATE IT

this TN screens have always less blackness and colour gamut. (who in hell want touch when you game ????)

i kill myself if new Xps have touch screen......bloody windows 8 functionality.

why? just because the screen is touch doesn't mean you have to use it.

Precisely, touch and display quality don't go hand in hand in the sense that you can have touch on both good or crap displays. Just because touch is there, it doesn't mean that you have to use it, I can definitely understanding wanting a display with better gamut and IPS. Now, it's possible that to cut cost and keep touch, Dell went for a lower quality display. However as much as I consider touch on a traditional laptop to be a gimmick, if the other requirements are there including display quality, touch functionality won't make it a no go for me.

    Is it your speculation?
Have you some links about that?

Watching better the new Inspiron it seems Dell is using the same chassis of actual XPS and maybe they are solved XPS throttling issue using ULV CPU

Dell Sweden told me about new Xps.......they said pre-order/commercial starts in middle/end of Oct.

about touch screen...............are you guys for real ???.....there is no touch screen (15" or 17") in the world who have superior screen quality then top of the line TN screens (or of course) IPS panels...................thats just the way it is.

I think there are no IPS screen on Inspiron, because according to this image:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...touch-haswell-gt750m-dell_inspiron_7000_2.jpg

They speak of 160° viewing angle, so it is some kind of TN, just like the actual XPS.

Touch screen can be TN, IPS, AMOLED and all the others technology, the only aesthetic difference is a glass cover over the screen to protect and to facilitate fingers scroll.

I'm having a hard time believing that the 14" version is really only 15.3mm thick, especially with a touchscreen. Also sucks that it won't have a dedicated GPU option.

That indeed sucks. Here's to hoping it'll ship with HD5000 or Iris Pro graphics.

So is this a new upgrade for special edition series too? It seems to me like special edition and I am interested.

What is the price in comparison to the previous model?

It looks like Dell has killed the 17 inch Inspiron Special Edition model for 2013? How sad. I was looking forward to seeing some 17 inch inspiron special edition laptops with the new Haswell chip. why has dell killed off the 17 inch?

Too bad? I have found a very good deal

    Dell 15 R special edition

    With
    i7-3632QM Processor
    2GB AMD Radeon HD 7730M
    Full HD anti glare screen

For just 690 pounds ( it was 900) including 3 years extended guarantee and I am not sure if I should go for it or I should wait the new line. I don't want to end up getting for the same price ULV CPUs which are slower than these or they might have WiFi/throttling issues like the last XPS line.

Tablets as iPad (retina) have great touch screens. YES
Some desktop screens have great touch screens. YES

but i assume we talking about laptops here. And like i Said before. Touch screens on laptops are Way behind compared to top of the line TN or IPS panels.

Hmm, I don't see a whole lot of room for cooling. I sure hope we are not looking at overheating issues again. I've been waiting since May for a Haswell replacement for the 17R Special Edition. Spec wise this has everything I was looking for. As long as anti-glare is an option and it doesn't overheat.

    "Combination headphone/ microphone jack"

Hmm, that doesn't seem right for the 17" model, does it?

Well Special Edition kinda implies that it won't be around forever lol. The 17 inch Inspiron isn't killed off and you'll be able to get one in the 7000 series. Whether the 3 or 5000 series offer a 17 inch size remains to be seen. (I suspect they will)

Personally, I would at least see how the new 7000 series fares in reviews and such. At least for me, this is the first Inspiron system I've got my eye on in a very long time...IMO it marks the return of Dell finally taking the Inspiron line seriously again in terms of construction and attention to detail, just like the 1420/1520/1720 days.

Sure, those machines weren't exactly in vogue in terms of weight and thickness but they were truly over engineered in terms of construction and thoughtful touches.

More and more PC makers seem to be going that route for the headphone jack..surely there's enough space on a 17 inch laptop for two separate jacks though. o_O

The lack of HD5000 graphics (or Iris Pro) on the integrated graphics models is disappointing. I get that Apple's likely got the former on lock for MacBook Air but surely not the latter.

Exactly. I currently own an inspiron 1520. it was a grat machine when I bought it. Amazing CPU, GPU ( for when I bought it ofc) no throttlin, no overheating issues but still it was well enginered.

I just don't want to get a new inspiron that will compromise the perfomance part just to have a nicer looking laptop.

Laptops for me are not just gadgets, it is ok fi theya re nice etc but they are more important as tools

I am sorta the same way, so I get that for sure!

Part of it can likely be blamed on the tablet craze - a lot of people would rather just have a tablet for portable stuff and no longer need to upgrade as often. Another can likely be due to a Dell Inspiron release not exactly being on most power users radar (they'll likely look at XPS, Alienware or Latitude/Precision systems first due to the Inspiron's brand image as of late.

Most places report the release as thursday so perhaps people aren't bothering to check em out until then? I want to see reviews of these systems badly.

Yeah, i decided to sit back and wait for reviews first although form what i see being reported I shouldnot have my hopes high. I will probably have to buy an xps.

I like alienware but I hate 14 inch screens for gaming, I mean what is the point to make a gaming laptop more portable. I know some people use extyernal monitors but still

Looks like a great screen, specs and hardware. Price is very reasonable too!

But no VGA or minidisplay port? What a let down. I know it's old tech by now, but this will be useless at work for me. Yeah I know it's a consumer device, but still disappointing.

I'm definitely a Power User (mostly gaming), but that doesn't mean I have a lot of money to spend.

I spent over $2000 on my last Dell (Precision M4400), but it's pushing 5 years now. I can't spend that much this time. I would have kept the 17R Special Edition I ordered in May if it didn't overheat and throttle like it did.

My biggest concern is that the cooling system is going to be a problem here as well.

Huh, I just realized that the 14" and 15" models don't have optical drives. I wonder if that allows the 15" model to have two drive bays or if the SSD option is just mSATA.

Maybe they dedicated the extra space left by the optical drive for cooling. Wouldn't that be nice. ;)

a 4 cell gives me pause...I equipped my D630 with a 9 cell and was (well until the battery wore out..managed to get a replacement under warranty...the 9 cell on the D series is so bad) spoiled by the long battery life.

I gotta remember it's Haswell though and technology's improved since 07. Glad to see that one will be able to access the battery.

I guess the system seen with a optical drive in the CNet hands on was the 17 inch. I'm shocked that the 15 inch doesnt have it but maybe that'll leave space for other stuff.

Ya, a 4 cell battery is pretty small. There's no way it will provide enough current to run the GPU on battery. Guaranteed, you will be restricted to just the Intel 4400 GPU on battery. Which is fine since the Haswell GPU is a major improvement over the 4000.

I also don't mind that there's no optical drive, assuming the space is put to good use and there's some cost savings. I already have a portable USB DVD-RW and I rarely use the drive on my current laptop.

I just checked the 15 inch models on Dell Euro sites. The highest end model has a nvidia GT 750M SLI OMG. I just hope it wont have throttling issues as it is quite thin.

    I have just checked Dell.it, Dell.de, Dell.co.uk and the max GPU is a simple GT750m with 2GB GDDR5.

My mistake I mixed the sites. it wouldn't make sense anyway as a 4 cell battery would be drained too fast.
Anyway as long as they don't get overheated & throttled they should be fine. Not to mention the WiFi problems that XPS line had

Why would Dell announce that the 15 7000 would be available with a 1080p screen and NVidia graphics and then not have them available on release day. :(

At least they are not available in Canada or the US.

I thought the exact same thing when I saw the product this morning. I was almost ready to order a fully equipped 15" with FHD display. :(
Have you guys ever looked at the Acer V7-482PG-6662? IPS FHD display, Touch, Haswell i5-4200U, good construction, 14" though. I had almost ordered it but then I thought my eyes would be bad for getting a 14" 1080p display. ;p

Dell Canada currently offers 6 months no interest financing which I want to take advantage of. No other company even offers financing.

Otherwise I might have gone for a Lenovo Y510p months ago.

These look very nice - itching to buy the top end model at £799 in the UK with 1080p screen
However just wish it would have a quad core (probably would never need it anyway saying that)

Just waiting on some decent reviews now regarding heating issues and overall performance

    Fingers crossed

I saw that today too. Was hoping that the "pre-order" configs were just due to some desire to ramp up or something. Seeing those fixed configs on launch day is pretty mediocre, but kind of not surprising.

I guess the 17" model has the option of 1080p & GT750m right now. Although the base model is only $50 more in Canada while the top model (with 1080p & dGPU) is $200 more!!!!!

Our currency is almost equal. I don't mind paying $50 more for whatever reason, but $200 is ridiculous.

    **

On another note, I recently discovered that the Latitude 3540 has the i5-4200U, 1080p anti-glare screen and Radeon HD 8850m (on par with the GT750m) for $780. Seeing the prices of these Inspirons is pushing me towards the Latitude.

I just need them to match US pricing. With 1 year complete care it's $820 on the US site (it's on sale). In Canada it's $1215 (not on sale).

Edit: Oh no, the sale ends tomorrow and Dell Canada Small Business is closed for today. Oh man, so sad. :(

That's a good find also its comes with a 6 cell battery and windows 7 that's a plus for me. So I don't have to install it .
    I don't see it has a 1080 screen.

    The i5 model has this...

"15.6FHD WLED AUO LCD" and sales confirmed that it's anti-glare.

Unfortunately, there are no digital video outputs (no HDMI/no displayport).

Edit: I was able to get a hold of someone on the phone. They wouldn't match the $360 discount offered on the US site. Seems like quite the deal.
