Hello: I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 9400, with a T7400 2.16 ghz Core 2 Duo with 2 gig of DDR2 ram. I've already done the hot fix (K8896256) and updated the registry and boot.ini, but still I'm not happy with the speed when video recoding. Using DVD Shink 3.2 on a HP ZV5000 I can recode a unencrypted dvd in 33 minutes, on my HP Desktop with and AMD 4200X2 cpu and 2 gig of ram I can recode the same video using DVD Shink in 10 minutes. When I try to recode the same video on the Dell Inspiron 9400 also using DVD Shrink it takes 1 hour and 8 minutes.
I've spent hours with Dell Tech support in India, with no help what-so-ever. I've tried disabling speedstep in the bios, I've shut down and even uninstalled ZoneAlarm, I've disabled all start-up applications in msconfig, and flushed the prefetch, and still I can get this laptop to recode faster. When I look at the preformance in Task Manager, I see both cpu cores, with one running at 100% and the other idle, when I am recoding a video. However, I can run DVD Shrink or Nero Recode more that once and recode two video's a the same time, only then will I see the second core being ulitlized in Task Manager. And of course when I do this everything becomes very slow, and even the mouse movements hesitates.
Please, anyone, if you can offer any suggestions I would be most greatful.

i dont' know about this man. Normally if i use decrypt dvd it' probably takes me 25 mins or 30 mins like you said. U might want to try an external high speed DVD, bc the build in laptop dvd drive is not as fast as the desktop one.

almost all software available today is coded to only take advantage of one core. just because an application only utilizes one core doesn't mean you have a hardware problem, more likely, it simply means the app is only able to use one core.

regarding drive speed, go into the BIOS and change the drive's mode.

Thank You Thank You Thank You
You were right, when I tried recoding using a external usb drive everything hit the mark.
I contacted Dell Support and they are sending me out a new DVD Drive, I sure hope it's not the Philips, but they could not tell me which make of drive I would receive.
Thanks again, for all your help
