Hm I was under the impression that the white and black ones have the original casing, not made from the micro satin finish or whatever the hell they call it.
They should let us design our own laptop cover. That woulda been kinda cool. I'd get the rainbow Louie Vuitton print all over it.
Just kidding.![]()

Wow, I went to see one in person and was totally underwhelmed. I had every intent of ordering one so long as the keyboard wasn't atrocious. Unfortunately, it had an annoying scratching sound you could hear even above mall noise with every key press. Horrid.
Other than that, it's the same plastic casing from the last generation. The curved sides didn't bother me as much as I'd thought, but the sea of that metallic gray plastic on the inside made the thing look like a trash can lid.
These things are an undeniable value with the deals going on right now, thats for sure. But this is still very much the same Dell. -
i agree about the coloring how it looks like a trashcan lol, but the keyboards are supposed to be very good, most reviews say they are comparable to the lenovo laptop keyboards
-
I'm glad I waited for the real unbiased impressions before ordering one. Thank you for saving me money. -
i call bull****
ever hear of self-confirmation bias? -
bs on what?
-
Rodknee I presume. He takes the comments of one poster above numerous reviewers.
I have no comment on the matter. -
No, the black and white are of a totally different material than the rest of the colors.
-
I'm excited about the red color... it's not quite as dark as "crimson" but it's very nice... I'll bet that the back of the inspiron sort of feels like the inside door handles on my GTI.
And yes, I have my doubts as to whether one poster can negate the impressions of the other reviewers. -
There is a decent amount of travel on key strike compared to the previous generation Inspirons, which is something I like. But there was very little resistence and then that sound.....a swishing/scratching sound with every strike.
Again, this was a deal breaker for me. Maybe others aren't as picky. Just add my impressions to the other input you've received and make your own decision or wait for other reviews. -
I personally didn't jump on an Inspiron 1520 right away because it's a new model and I want to see some reviews first. In Belgium we don't have Dell stores where we can check out the laptops first.
I'm not sure where all the "new Dell keyboards are like Thinkpads" comments come from. I only found one real review so far, and it's the one of Andrew at this forum. And it's not even a full review, it's more a description of the outside. All the other posts/articles on the new Dell Inspirons are more like product annoucements. -

hey is the 1720 there with a 1440 res or is it the 1920???

i checked out at the kiosk myself and although they didn't have any working models, I tried out the keyboard and it was heaven upgrade from any laptop I have ever worked on. Dell's keys are excellently sized with Toshiba-style feedback (which i love).
color wise, micro-satin is this rubbery feeling so you won't scratch it while white and black are just normal laptop covers. I must say, white is ugly, yellow was a LOT better than i thought while green is a lot worse. brown is good (looks just like black, but with rubbery micro-satin!) and red and pink are both okay. black looks the best I must admit, but my gf told me to go with microsatin in case I don't take care of it... -
can't wait to get my hands to one of these for more shots.
-
Thanks for the pics. But....I still don't see why so many people think Black looks bad? I love the way it looks....
-
-
Besides, they pay you $20 to get a black one, whats wrong with that?

Yeah, you don't have to pay extra for Black, but I know that's not why I chose Black. I love how it looks. The only other color I would have considered was Midnight Blue. The rest look really.....idk....The only type of laptop I'd want to have a different paintjob is an Alienware. I don't see how it's a good reason to not get Black just because "a lot of people are going to get it".
-
Like I said I loved the black and the red, I could not decide so that was the only advantage I could think off.
But I would not pick a color I did not like just because it was different.
-
Anyone had a pink one delivered yet? I'm bummed qwerty was unable to get a pic of the pink one. I'd also like to see some of the green. It's pathetic that I have decided about everything else and now can't pick a color!
I agree that black is timeless, but I'm nervous about the finish. Say no to fingerprints!
New Inspiron Pictures!
