    Hi there,

I recently recieved an inspiron 1720. After running a clean install (vista 32 bit) I'm having a lot of trouble getting vista to recognise my bluetooth modulue. When I try to install drivers from the dell website, the program asks me to activate my bluetooth device. Flicking the WiFi button (which quickset tells me should turn bluetooth on) doesn't bypass this and I am forced to exit the installation. The device manager doesn't show any bluetooth devices, however BIOS tells me it should be activated.

I've posted this on a few wireless forums, but no one has any ideas. Has anyone else experiences this on their new inspiron?

    Help please! thanks

okay this happened to me to, follow these instructions:

    1. go into your bios (hold f2 at boot screen) turn off your bluetooth.
    2. Go into your install folder, don't do automatic install crap, click on the inst.exe (it's in the win32 folder)
    3. install everything, this is where the drivers will be installed.
    4. they will ask you to turn on the bluetooth again, hit okay or cancel or whatever, the driver will finish installing.
    5. go back into bios, turn on the bluetooth module
    6. at the next reboot you should see the bluetooth icon and voila you can just turn it on through that

Thanks Frozen, I decided to do a clean install of vista on my 1420 (glad I did, it boots up way faster and it doesnt lag while opening and closing windows, there is a great improvement) but anyway, while trying to install bluetooth it kept asking me to switch it on which it wouldnt let me do, till the point where I had to cancell the install. but thanks to your instructions I was able to get it to work :D

haha i'm glad it helped so many people, i was relaly frustrated for the longest time until i read a thread on dell's own forum that hinted at the solution (it was for the older e1501 though.)
