    Hi, does anyone know if the Inspiron 1720/vostro 1700 pis sold with ECC or NON-ECC RAM?, and what are the benefits of ECC? :confused: :confused:

    They are sold with non-ECC ram. I am 99.99% sure. ECC ram is FAR more expensive and I have no clue whatsoever about the point of ECC. I think ECC basically means that the RAM checks for errors :D :rolleyes:

    No consumer nbs are sold with ECC memory. No consumer desktops, too, for that matter. First of all, they need a special slot, which is incompatible with non Parity RAM. And as Gautam said, it's far too expensive to be standard. You'll find ECC RAM only in servers and accuracy critical computing environments.

    It will be one of two types:
    DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667 • 1.8V
    or
    DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 1.8V

    The Vostro 1500 I ordered lists the first type. Of course, I can upgrade that for a little more than half the price by using www.crucial.com when I go to 4GB.
