    Hi Guys,

I have just purchased the dell M1210 and have been reading some information about the new Intel quad core CPUs. I read somewhere that it is the same socket size as the core 2 duos. Does this means we will be able to upgrade the chips in our notebooks? will it just be a case of updating the bios?

    What do you think?

Don't know where you heard that, but I doubt it. The current Merom chip is pin compatible, but the newer higher frequency bus Merom chips will not be, they will be moving to a new Socket P standard. It may be possible that the Socket P will be compatible with the new quad core chips, but I don't think they will be arriving any time soon.

    More info here

The Kentsfield chips (Intel's Quad Cores) uses the same socket as Core 2 Duo Conroe chips (desktop processor), not Core 2 Duo Merom chips (notebook processor).

Core 2 Duo for desktops and notebooks both use different sockets.

Plus, the Quad Core's coming out will only be for desktops as of now (and probably sometime), since it needs quadrupole the power of current Merom chips and will need far more cooling than Merom chips.

So no, you can't upgrade your M1210 to a Quad Core processor.

actually, the quad core should only produce and use twice the amount of heat as memorn since it's 2 memorn glued together which gives it a total of 4 cores

No, it's two Conroe chips together.

There's no plans for a Merom based Quad Core from Intel as of yet.

Quad core for notebooks isnt out yet, and it will take a long time before it will be finished. Santa Rosa platform is first, with it's 800 MHz FSB and 800 MHz DDR2 support, Dual Core, 64-bit, new extensions, DX 10 support, new wireless-lan (812.n) etc. etc. :)

    Charlie :)

Intel's already released some info on the platform scheduled to replace Santa Rosa.

The Montevina platform, scheduled for 2008, will use Penryn, Intel's 45nm version of the current Core 2 processors (65nm).

So, unless Penryn will also be support Quad Cores (which from what's already out, it doesn't look like it), Quad Core notebooks wont be known as of yet until AT LEAST the platform to replace Montevina is announced, if ever.

So are you saying my notebook is a pile of crap already! Doh! I just got it. Looks like I will have to save my pennies for a kick butt desktop computer next year.

Quad Core is very sweet but I have no idea right now which program or application will utilize this technology. Only multi-tasking user should find it to be very useful.
