I've been in possession of my new m1330 for less than 24hours and I couldn't be more dissapointed. First and foremost is the annoying high pitched whine that so many others are reporting, it is possibly the most annoying thing i've ever experienced in a computer. I tried the rmclock tweak (the one that is supposed to save on battery life) and that seemed to help, but it's not completely gone. Ive reinstalled windows since then so I think that would have removed the rmclock changes? Secondly I'm dissapointed with performance my specs:
2.0 ghz core 2 duo (centrino sticker on case)
    2 gb ram
    8400gs
My roommate just got a vostro with identical specs (his has no centrino sticker) a couple weeks ago, and I got this one based on the fact that his seemed to do everything i needed. But when I play source, mine seems quite a bit slower, on dust 2 its constantly dipping from 20-70 frames. I have the latest graphics driver from the dell site, I actually tried the latest drivers from laptopvideo2go, but my hdmi out didn't seem to work with those, so I though maybe dells were the only ones that were compatible with it. Which brings me to my 3rd issue, I really wanted the xps because it was the only one with hdmi, I have a 24 1920x1200 monitor and wanted to use the hdmi with it because that's its best input, plus I'd like to plug into an hdtv in the near future, but the hdmi doesn't play friendly with my montior, the resolution is off and it looks blurry, I played with other resolutions like 1920x1080, but that didn't help, so I connected with vga and it looks better, but not nearly as good as my old desktop going to hdmi. Does anyone know if this will connect well to an hdtv, I'm thinking this is just an issue with monitors like this.

So for these reasons, I'm thinking of returning this, I have no idea what would seemingly cause my lappy to run slower than my roommates, although i have my suspisions about the centrino thing, what does it do? i'm afraid it keeps underclocking my cpu to save power, no? Or did messing with rm clock permanently lower some settings? But really the noise, the noise, the noise. It's so much louder than my roommates vostro, on all levels, even disregarding the high pitched whine. So should i return this, and see if I can get an m1530, I can't seem to find as many complaints about the noise, is it much better than the 1330? Plus i wouldn't mind a little more size. I'm not married to dell either, perhaps my best bet is with an hp, they seem to have hdmi as well. Thanks for reading my rambling post, and any insight would be much appreciated.

If the whining is driving you crazy, I would return it. I put up with mine for almost a year (look at sig) but I never got used to it...it will always drive you crazy ! But as for why the Vostro might run faster, it might be due to less bloatware that are in Vostros vs Inspiron or XPS. It is strongly recommended that you do a Clean Install when you buy a Dell laptop! HP had a lot too that I had to remove!

Thanks for the info, Actually before I ran windows for the first time i deleted all partitions and made a fresh install. I hear ya about the noise, I barely even want to type this message out because it's driving me crazy. But any ideas if the m1530 is better regarding the noise? And any comments on the hdmi. Thanks

thanks for the info. Is it hit or miss about the noise in the m1330 or do they all have it and only some people are annoyed enough to comment about it. I guess I'll see if they will just replace it with a 1530.

I had 2 and they both had the high pitch whine. my 2nd went for a cash return, don't want to deal with getting another whiner!

Yeah thats I'm wondering if thats what I should do too, I wonder if that HDMI isn't even worth bothering with and I should just get a vostro like my roommates which seems to be perfect, but that HDMI would be really nice if it works perfect on an HDTV, hoping someone can comment about that.

If you aren't happy with your laptop, return it. It's that simple. Upgrade to the 8600m gt while you're at it. The difference is huge!

Edit - then you can pwn your noob roommate. -_-

Well just got off the phone with customer care, they said they can't/won't replace it with another model, but I could just return it and buy a new one. Problem is I got a pretty slickdeal on this one if ya know what I mean. So I'd prolly end up paying a lot more to return this and get a m1530, but reading up it sounds like some of the 1530's have the noise issue too, so I really don't know what to do. Guess I'll be searching for some good deals.

I'd return it! If your not totally happy , you pay too much to just sort of like it.
