Hey, I was thinking about selling my iMac G5 and just getting a 17" inch multimedia laptop as a full time desktop replacement... I'd attempt to get XP Pro loaded onto it as well instead of Vista... below are the specs, what do you think about price? I'm paying $1155.04 shipped. I would probably put 4GB of RAM into it (but from Dell it's $100 freakin' dollars more), and according to the configurator their is room for 2 hard drives... I'd probably sell the 160GB drive in it and put in 2 x 7200RPM drives and stripe it. And no gigabit ethernet option is the only other issue. Just wanted ur opinion before (IF) I pull the trigger. I don't know how much I can get for my G5 (I'm hoping $1,000)

I just converted from an imac to a dell studio :) . Hopefully I made the right choice! My only concern is whether to run pc-decrapifier and other stuff to manually get rid of bloatware, or just a complete fresh reformat. How complicated is the latter? (I read the thread, seems pretty simple).

JB, what makes you shy away from Vista in favor of XP? Curious because I'm also getting back into the windows world.

I think its a sweet build. Two Samsung 320s and 4 Gb of ram from newegg for another 270 bucks. Those HDs rip.

wipe/reload! problem fixed!!! forget trying to remove it all... I mean, I HAVE done it millions of times before, however it just takes time... I have all the experiance so I don't need to worry about removing something I would need because I know what I need and don't obviously. But the simple answer is to wipe/reload. as for the Vista question: Vista is just XP on steroids and sucks resources (Like RAM) (for example on a FRESH install on vista business it takes up 700+MB of RAM!!!!, now factor in bluetooth, WIFI, & Sprint NDIS services and you are over 1GB just at idle, now add some office 2007 (which i'm ALSO NOT A FAN OF!!!) crap (few docs and such open) and you are up to 1.2 - 1.5GB of RAM usage!!! FORGET IT!!!!!

XP Works fine for what I want....

One more thing on battery life on Vista!! I have a toughbook and I can get about 6 hours on full brightness (about 10 hours at low brightness) and with vista its 4 & 7 hours respectivly!!! I've done extensive testing (and have XP Pro & Vista Business loaded on my toughbook, both LEGIT, LEGAL OEM COA'S)

    Their ya have it!
