Just wanted to let you guys know that IT IS possible to do it. And can be done with very tolerable temps... 71C under max load.

    My system once again.
    Inspiron 1520
    T7100
    2.5gig RAM
    Clean Vista Install
    165.01 Vista 32bit Drivers for LaptopVideo2go
    From 475/400 to 600/500

I can probably squeeze a few more points by adding 10-20 on both clocks, so don't underestimate Dell's 8600 =D

Find some good drivers in XP that allow overclocking and you'll be my hero. I haven't been able to find any yet.

After overclocking, I assume it uses more batteries. How long can you use the computer until it dies?

hmm I think i'm gonna buy this laptop and its good to see such benchmarks. One question though. Does any overclocking void the warranty on the machine? thx

Supposedly not. When i was complaining about the speed, the Dell rep was recommending me to overclock.

Matt, you were at 1024x768 whereas Chaos is doing it w/1280x1024. Could (one of) you (clock to 680/550 MHz) and test with 1280x1024 and post your result?

EDIT: can we underclock these cards and have the batteries last longer? i.e. when i'm in class I'd just want to check email / type things. at home, i might be doing more demanding things...

ok haha if dell recommends it then I will probably try it when I need to. Any chance that was like an online chat that you saved? Then if they say it does void your warranty just say they recommended it and show them

You benched in 1024x768 not 1280x1024, so your scores aren’t comparable. I think his score is respectable, and reaching the upper limits of a ddr2 8600 at 1280 (standard test resolution). The ram in the dell 8600 overclocks the same as ddr2 so I wouldn’t put much faith in riva tuner saying it’s gddr3.

wow i didn't didn’t realize how late I was to post the res difference. I shouldn’t surf while I post.

It was tech support. I was actually asking the same quesiton. Wouldn't that void my warranty. They said no. BUT!! I would suggest you to make sure.

71deg is very reasonable if that's stable. I was checking out a other mobile GPUs and people are reporting running in the 80's and even 90's.

Yeah, the overclock you do only applies to the 3d clocks. When you're not actually running a game or some 3d intensive app, the card will be running at the 2d clocks.

Nice gfx card man that sounds like my dead hp! I used to play command and couqueror generals on that thing lol. But umm I doubt you;d see a big hit for normal things like web browsing and all especially coming from a POS like the radeon

I'm surprised that a mobile chip by nvidia wouldn't already do some kind of speedstep-like downclocking while on battery. It's a pretty big deal...

FYI, if anyone is wondering about the system that scored that fastest (25733) listed on that screenshot - here it is.
Someone is getting ready to pour some dry ice on it. LOL

I don't get this thread. I thought the stock 8600M GT (700MHz memory) scores something like 3900-4000.

And although 3DMark scores may be similar, it won't help games that are memory bandwidth limited. Your memory is still far from the 700MHz of the stock GDDR3 version.

Relax dudes.....I've OC'd every PC I've ever had. Nothing ever fried or anything else. When doing a Video Card....you just do it until you start seeing a few artifacts (sparkles...things like that) then back down a tad. Verify with games...if any lock...back down a bit more. Dell will never know. I repeat.

    DELL WILL NEVER KNOW!

Reference.....In '02 I had briefly the #3 spot at the 3DMark site. My current desktop (long in tooth but still works fine) has been running a 800Mhz+ CPU OC, and every Vid card over the years as much as they can take. I once had to RMA a long OC'd piece of Ram...they too said OC voids warranty. THey replaced it no question. This I9300 I'm typing on has had its Video OC'd since the first week I got it two years ago. Boys PC is also running a mild OC (not great cooling on that PC or I'd go for more)

Have fun and enjoy your PC's.

Not sure about cheap repair, but they do offer cheap extensions on their warranty. And that would be considered very extreme, The DDR3 version is clocked at 700mhz, the max anyone has been able to OC it to in the dell is about 680

Are you using an external monitor? If not, your scores will be higher because a WXGA screen can't run 3DMark06 at default resolution (1280x1024).

I'll do some testing with my vostro 1500 in the morning with 3dmark06.

    I have the 1.6 C2D santa rosa, 2gb 667 ram, 8600m GT.

When I run at 1280x800, what tests do you guys consider typical to run when benchmarking, just so I know what to select to be comparable to everyone?
