I heard Intel is coming out with new Penryn processors in January 2008.

Wonder how long it will take Dell to transition to the Penryn's in their Inspiron notebooks. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm going to wait until Dell switches to Penryn, UNLESS they have a $500 coupon without the sneaky upgrade tweaks. I'm glad they didn't let me use that coupon, NOW I get to wait for a Penryn. LOL.

Probably around January. That release date is for individual consumers, but manufacturers get stock of these products awhile before the public release.

The release of the Geforce 9 platform is rumoured for a Q1 debut aswell according to my newsfeeds. My waiting for Vista SP1 prior to purchase is proving to be a very wise decision indeed.

They should be a drop-in replacement for the existing Merom processors. Dell doesn't usually waste a lot of time before offering new processors... especially if they don't have to redesign anything. I expect Dell to offer them as soon as (1) Intel allows them to, and (2) they get a reasonable supply of them. Sometimes Dell doesn't even wait for the second condition.

Likely the new Inspiron 15" laptop is for this processor, but that's just an idea.

Don't worry, when new parts come out, vendors waste no time at all to discontinue one product and force people to buy another.

Q1 2008 is expected to be the launch of a lot of new technology, being 100% accurate and true is another story.

But don't you guys think Dell should try to sell MOST of their old CPU's they are using now?? Because if they start selling laptops with the new Penryns RIGHT AWAY, they lose money... they'll have piles of the ones they are using right now. So it would make sense for them to start having some more HOLIDAY sales before the Penryns arrive in January 2008.

But dell doesn't seem to be having any good deals....... but I don't mind, I can wait for the Penryn's. LOL.

edit: I'm not sure what you guys mean by "they don't waste any time getting new stuff out". Are you guys referring to laptops ONLY? or Desktops too? Because I've kept track of desktop cpu's and Dell has ALWAYS been behind with new desktop CPU's by at least a month or two. EXCEPT the "Intel EXTREME" processors which is only for top of the line XPS.

It wont go waste.... They will make use of it for replacements to the older laptops as well as when they launch a notebook based on a new processor they dont completely discontinue notebooks with older processors... For all these the stock becomes handy....
