Yeah...Like...CNET. Or...PC World.
Come on dude, do you write a "professional review" everytime you get a new toy? Besides, how are you going to give a super awesome review like a day after you just got it. Patience, you. -

Hello guys, I recently bought an XPS, so when i heard that Dell was offering a monster 17", I was a little dis-heartened. BUT, after exhaustive reviews, I am still very happy with my decision. I thought I would give my 2 cents here on the 2. first my config:
15.4" UXGA (note: 1920x1200)
3.4Ghz P4
512 DDR
256MB ATI 9800
100GB HD
DVD/CD-RW
Most importantly, i value screen real estate over power, because i spend a large amount of time multi-tasking when i am programming. So that would be a pro to the 9200. Next on the list is performance.
256mb 9800 vs 128mb 9700. winner? XPS.
I could go on and compare absolutely everything, but im working in a busy library so i don't have that kind of quality time.
I would like to point out that a friend of mine has the 9200, and it is amazing. Both the XPS and 9200 have their strong points, and my hat is off to Dell for the level of quality they put into both models.
as for a winner, that would be up to you. the XPS spanks the the 9200 for performance, but the 9200 brings a monster screen, and goes for about 4 hours off AC.
The XPS is heavier than the 9200. The uxga screen on the 9200 has a funny shimmer & white-shades look a bit funny, versus the undeniably crystal clear xps screen.
So, I'll leave the decision up to you. Personally, if i had to buy new, I would still go with the XPS,, if only for bragging rights!
On a final note, I thought i would mention that you need perfect 20/20 vision for the XPS's super fine 15.4" 1920x1200 resolution. EVERY single person that has seen my laptop, (in the range of 100 people, (remember i work in a library)) EVERY one of them was not able to read text on the screen from more than 2.5' - 3' feet away.
Text really is that small,,, but it pays off when you can play UT2004 @1920x1200x32bit with EVERY graphical setting maxxxed out and STILL get more than 90FPS. (I've gotten over 120fps in some levels!!)
Thanks for your time.
Dan
The power is always in your hands. All we really need is the perseverance to wield it. -
hey itdanshare, thanks for your thoughts on the XPS versus 9200 here. The XPS is definitely billed as the gaming machine offering from Dell, while the 9200 is the desktop replacement entry. Of course there is some overlap there as you allude too, but you are right that if somebody wants bragging rights on performance then a tweaked out XPS is going to win every time.
