Received my Red 1420 yesterday. Took some pictures and unfortunately I saw a crack from behind between the hinges... in the silver area. Its pretty easy to see on Picture 3. Everything else seems to be working good. The screen does not have the grainy problem as far as my eyes can see. I also shot the BT travel mouse, creative buds, 9 cell battery and IR remote. Have not used any BT yet.. I think I have to install software for that. The creative buds actually sound very nice with good bass. Best creative buds I have used. There is no sound issues either as reported with the 1520. There is some wavy lines in the display picture which is not there. Must be the camera. Very hard to shoot pictures. I turned off the flash and only managed to get one semi clear shot of the display. I love the WXGA + high res screen. Text is not too small and love all that area to work with. Now I have to call dell about this crack in the back. Its really too bad but I think I will have to get a new machine.. That should not be there in a new notebook.. I am worried that crack will spread clear across the back. If I had not shot these pictures I probably would have never seen it.
Anyway, I am not going to review anything else since I barely set up my WIFI and I am pretty lost in Vista right now.. never used it before. But will say the internet connection is 5 bars strong anywhere in my house.. I have a 6 year old smc access point and the regular dell wireless options on the 1420.

OK called dell.. they are going to send replacement and I can keep this one until the other one arrives. The overseas gal I spoke with was very nice and professional. Its kind of frustrating that Dell overlooked this defect. However, they seem to be willing to make things right. I just wanted to add that my first choice was a Sony red CR and the 1420 owns that. I mean the CR is a toy to this thing. I am so happy that the new inpiron line came out in time for me cancel the Sony order. As far as I can see, I was one crack away from a perfect portable notebook.

new pics! thanks, hey dude does that remote controller came with your computer??
-
-
i have to be honest, can't see the crack what-so-ever in picture three..or any of the other pictures for that matter... but that kinda sucks that you finally got your computer and its not 100% perfect. love the red color! thanks for posting pics

oh i see it now..it is INCREDIBLY noticeable in the first picture of the bunch (labeled, picture003). Yeah, good thing you are getting a new one
How long is that going to take...a year? lol! good luck!!!

As this is a high stress area, I am only left to think the worst case scenario where this will eventually separate across the whole back of the seam between the hinges.

Somehow I think that this may be a return or dell knew of this and thought the user would not see it. I did get it pretty quick and this may be the reason why. I know my dad once bought a refurbished Dell and it had a few dead pixels on it. When I saw that I knew why the original person sent it in. My dad keep it.. but I would have rejected that. So after that I don't always trust Dell from knowingly shipping defective product. Since this is a new machine, I expect that its all in one piece when I receive it.. Thank god I did this photo shoot this morning.. I would not have seen that for a long time. Dell may have been banking on that.. but they lost. Or maybe it just slipped past QC.. Since they are taking care of it I will give them the benefit that it slipped by quality audit.
Being I work at Sennheiser I know a bit about QC. This sort of issue would never ship at Sennheiser. But every manufacturer has different degrees of allowable defects. Generally, no manufacturer will ship a device with a scratch etc.. that is in the top of a device.. they will reject it.. since that is in plain view. If its in an area that is on the bottom or back like mine.. some companies would allow that to ship.. Every company has different degrees of what is acceptable. So when you get your lappies.. do a complete visual on the entire case, keyboard etc. -
I ordered a red Inspiron too.
I hope I don't get your return! -
since his is a 1420 and u got a 1520, i hope not either! lol

As I own a Ruby Red Inspiron 1420 myself, let me just say that pictures of the system, your photos or my own, do not do it justice. The red is a very elegant color, neither feminine nor masculine, and can appeal to both genders. Not typically a fan of red myself and a bit hesitant it would somehow emasculate my "machoness", I nonetheless chose this color for my new system. Upon opening the box I was so pleasantly surprised with my choice. It is both a deep rich red and somewhat rustic at the same time thanks to its metallic sheen when viewed at particular angles. It has a subdued yet entirely pleasant rubberized feel to it that appears to be quite resistant to scratches and does not pick up fingerprints at all.
It is a shame that you have to get a replacement unit...hopefully they can turn your original system around and sell it properly. I hate the idea of waste. Of course a crack in a brand new unit is unacceptable. If you would be so kind, could you tell me how the fan is running on your machine currently. When connected to AC power, is it constantly running in the slow speed? Or is it usually off while doing simple web surfing and such? -
I don't think that dell would ship you a defective unit... its a mass production unit.. some are bound to have some major as well as minor issues
-
Nice lappy.
What's your screen reso? Can you take a picture of your screen with the desktop icons on it?
I'm just curious. How is the screen resolution? NO complains? -
And yes.. the pics don't do this color justice. -
replacement went from 3-5 days to 10 days, this delay is ridiculous

So unless there is something wrong with my system, I really don't see how people can claim their 1420 runs so quiet. Even with a ceiling fan running at medium speed, and standing a few feet away from my laptop, I can definitely hear the fan running. I've already discussed this in another thread, but trying to get a consensus on the issue. With I8kfanGUI, my system is currently running at 43-44C.
-
Oh and I upped the DPI on my WXGA+ screen to 120.
-
-
I'm now running I8kfanGUI at the Office Setting with a Fan Enforcement Setting of 20msec and it's much quieter and the temps are around 47-51C. I'd still be interested to know how comparable systems were running/sounding straight out of the factory with defaults and without any fan utilities running.
Good luck with your replacement system. And as for the Bluetooth, your system should have come pre-installed with the BT utility. At least mine did. Also, when abouts did you order your system, was it through EPP, and the remote control was actually an option to check while building the system? After speaking with a CSR this afternoon, she told me the remote, new, would be $30, before taxes or shipping. The refurb is $11. -
-
Oh crap, I just ordered my 1420 as well and didn't even notice there was an option to buy the $11 remote.. I want it too.. back to Dell chat I go..
Ninja edit: Does the remote go inside the laptop like the others i've seen? -
and provides simple functionality for enjoying multimedia content. The Dell Travel Remote works with Dell MediaDirect and is also compatible with Microsoft® Windows Vista Media Center. The Dell Travel Remote does not require any software to function.
-
Yesterday, I order the yellow one for my daughter to take to university. It should arrive in 2 weeks. She can't wait for it to arrive.
-
I'm really surprised that they didn't tell you to do this. -
Just got my case in today.. that was DHL ground unlike the system which came next day Fed X. The case is nice with a good fit and feel to it. It should provide good protection for the laptop. I just used the Dell blue tooth travel mouse (pictured) and have to say this is the best notebook mouse I have ever used. Its response time is quick and very accurate. It has a good feel to it and has all the important functions like scrolling left, right and back and forward buttons. I highly recommend this accessory. I also included one more pic of 1420 from a side angle. This pic gives a little better feel for the red.. which is a rich color. But it still looks better in person.
