Well, I researched the new products from Dell including the soon to be released Studio XPS 13 and 16 and decided to take the plunge and order a new Studio 1537.

Based on my needs I thought a loaded Studio 1537 would be better than a stripped Studio XPS .... My basic requirements:

    • Work PC that is also portable for travel every 3 months
    • Full tech support and replacement for 3 - 4 years minimum
    • Current technology to maximize usable life of notebook
    • Proven tech without any known GPU flaws or CPU issues
Here is the order detail sheet from Dell. Take a look and let me know what you would change, add or delete.
The order has been placed, but will not ship until January 7 so I welcome your input and feel free to make suggestions. :)

    Thanks, Ted

Dell quoted a ship date of 1/7/09 so I have a few more weeks to wait... :(
I ordered another Studio for my wife on Black Friday and it arrived in less than 1 week :)

Thanks - looks like we have similar taste in PC's - I also have a Dell Quad Core desktop as well. ;)

Any thoughts on the new Studio XPS line ... pro or con?
I have been reading other threads on planned CES intro.

Cin, glad you replied ... I have enjoyed reading the collective wisdom on this board ... many late nights reading your posts. ;) Are you considering the Studio XPS?

Although I am a newbie on the Dell Notebook Forum, I have spent many moons on a few automotive forums ( Rennlist.com) and look forward to making a contribution here in the future.

Ted - how did you spec this machine for that price? That is exactly what I am looking to get. Thanks

Why did he get the 32-bit Vista and 4GB of RAM when Vista can only see 3.2GB max. This is why I got the 64-bit version so if I ever want to go to 6GB Vista can detect and use it. Heck its 2009 its time people started using a 64-bit OS.

The "speced" out 1537 with 3 Year Warranty fully loaded is a good argument supporting his jumping In and not waiting for a 1640 XPS Studio.

However, the 1640 XPS Studio is DDR3 RAM and the 1537 is old DDR2 RAM.

So even if his FSB is 1066 with his CPU the RAM has an 800Mhz Bottleneck so he is only as fast as his DDR2 RAM which is 800mhz.

And he is not even getting all he paid for he can't use the full 4GB.

IceCold, thanks for your suggestions regarding the 1066 RAM and 64-bit OS.
I like the 64-bit Vista, however, I was told that I might have issues with older drivers for printers, etc. Are you aware of any issues or is this a myth?

Regarding the RAM - will the FSB 1066 MHz CPU slow down to match the 800 MHz memory speed?
Is there any DDR2 RAM available at 1066 clock speed? I believe the DDR3 RAM will not fit the slots in the Studio 1537?

    Keep those suggestions coming... :)

Forgive my ignorance but what is the difference btw a Studio 1535 and 1537. I know the 1536 has AMD processors but this is the first time i've heard of a studio 1537.
    Thanks in advance!

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/

look up what ever hardware or software you care to run in Vista here. Most of it will run just fine in 64-bit.

one of my games is not 64-bit compatible, you right click it highlight run in XP SP2 compatability mode and it runs perfectly.

Thanks for clearing that up. I have another question regarding the Dell Wireless N Card. Do you know how the Dell 1510 N card in studio 15 is different from the Dell 1505 N Card in Xps 1330.

    Thanks

It is a newer model with a different chip in it. Should still be Broadcom based.

looks great-at least you did not get the 1200x800 screen---too small resolution...the 1440x900 should be a great improvement

also, with the ati 3450,,,,should be able to play quite a few games is needed,,,though i would get a 3650 if available..but dell does not offer many choices on certain notebooks.......thumbs down on dell.

memory is great as with the cpu,,,plenty of power for a notebook.

never had a studio,,,but i do like the specs on yours....should be a nice one....let us know how you like it - curious.

Thanks for your input on the Studio 1537 ... only the ati 3450 is available, no 3650 at this time.
