i purchased a vostro 1500 a few days ago, got it,
    core 2 duo 2.0ghz, 8600mgt, 2gb ram,
first thing i noticed is the touchpad is very erratic, the cursor jumps everywhere when i move my finger on the touchpad and it randomly clicks. When I rest my finger on the touchpad the cursor jumps all around the screen even if I dont move my finger. I installed newest drivers and adjusted sensitivity..etc.. but nothing works.

secondly, one day i reboot laptop and then it wont boot up anymore. I ran diagnostic and it says error 0142, and i called dell and they said I need to replace the hard drive?

wondering what dell's return policy is, because i am 3 days in and there are already two problems, plus I wasted so much time transferring all of my music, and data and homework onto the laptop and now its all gone...

If you are lucky they will sympathize and replace your system + offer a free upgrade for your troubles.

I guess it depends on the sales rep.

Return policy is 8 or 21 days depending on where you are. You should RMA it and buy a new one.

    I have the same problem

Uninstalled the drivers for the touchpad and installed them and it worked. Same problem came up again and did it again and its working now again but still...You shouldn't have to deal with crap like this.

If I could send it back I would but I leave the country on APril 14th for the next 4 years so theirs no way their going to be able to get it back to me in time. =\

Oh well, guess i'll have to drag a mouse everywhere

Depending on your location, the return period for the Vostro is up to 30 days after shipment date.

It is longer on the business line.

For people who are having problems with their touchpad, mention the discussion on Dell Forums.
They will send you a new power adapter using overnight shipping.

I had the same problem but touchpad works fine after the replacement.

Why a power adaptor to fix the touchpad?

Engineering wise I don't know. The reason they nailed it down to a faulty power adapter was because users were disconnecting the power adapter and the problem went away. The problem would reappear whenever the adapter was plugged back into the machine.
