    It is an Inspiron painted black as far as I know, although I do prefer the look the color gives the Vostro to be honest.

    Would be really nice if the outer cases are all mag alloy, though I am not expecting this on a laptop with a $549 USD starting price.

    Ive heard they are a composite plastic that feels like magnesium alloy, and that they chose to do this to improve the wireless reception (a metal case impedes this)

    Any idea if what I heard was realistic, or BS?

    IMO the vostro looks ugly in those pics. Probably coz of the green tint and very poor image quality.

    They are advertising it as Mag alloy. "Durability and reliability with magnesium-alloy chassis, sealed keyboards, steel hinges and over 13,000 hours of testing for Dell notebooks." <- from Dell's site.

    Also, if you look at the pictures they have, they show the WiFi antenna going up behind the screen.

    Judging from the pictures, I'd say the screen look squite good. I think he has the truelife. The pictures I've been seeing are making me want this more.

    its hardly everyone, 32 people voted they had a grainy screen on the poll and don't forget only unsatisfied customers tend to complain. Also none of the reviews or review sites complained about a grainy screen yet, either those 32 people have 1) very keen eyes, 2) they got lemons or 3) they are lying.

    Despite the poor quality photos, this notebook doesn't look too shabby... still a bit on the thick side for me, but if i had to choose, i think I'd pick a vostro over an inspiron.

    Just an observation.

    dont know much about benchmarks and what not, but in another thread someone ran the 3d mark with the nvidia 8600 and came out with the score of 2918. Based on what the pictures show on that chinese website the benchmark with the 8400 was 1267. I don't know anything about what those scores mean but I can only assume that higher is better. the 8600 is more than double the 8400.

    That's definitely the case. You're looking at 400/500 clocks for the 8400M GS while the 8600M GT's clocked at 475/400 for the DDR2 version. However the 8400M GS only has half the memory bus size (64 bit versus 128) and half the stream processors (16 versus 32). 3DMark 06 is extremely GPU intensive and may not completely reflect gaming performance, which often emphasizes the rest of the system more than 3DMark 06.

    its looks very aesthetically pleasing like a black macbook to me, maybe a bit more rounded sorta of reminds me of a compaq, maybe im seeing it wrong
