On 24-Aug, I took a chance and ordered a Vostro 1500 with WXGA+ and hoped that I would get a good screen. I lost. Today (30-Aug) I received it and as luck would have it, I have a grainy AUO screen. This screen has grain and light leakage and is not that bright unless I turn the brightness all the way up.

I love everything about this computer except for that screen. The keyboard is solid feeling, the battery is tight and as requested has very little bloatware.

Come on Dell get rid of those AUO screens!!!

So, what are my options with Dell? How long do I have to return this before my time runs out? What can I do to ensure that I get a better screen on replacement?

30 day return policy, you can talk to tech support and request the screen to be replaced.

Mine is being replaced monday so we'll see. I'll keep doing it until I have a screen I like and if within the 30 days, i don't get the screen I like, it's going back for a refund.

I probably would not have cared so much for the grainy screen, but when I put it next to a non grainy screen, OMG it was a night and day difference.

A lot of Vostro's and Inspirons are having this issue, seems to be a NEW problem.

Cheaply made Truelife screens. Something wrong with the coating....

    if u get yours replaced

I have concluded from reading the forum that dell stocks AUO and LPLG (Phillips-LG) screens for wxga+ 15.4 in

so get an LG screen, i haven't seen one complaint yet.

If you want to get a replacement system... then do so right away. Its the luck of the draw if your replacement is any better. I have seen no proof that dell actually picks non AUO for replacements.. but they should. Get a replacement and if thats bad I would return/refund both.. Thats what I did. I have HP dv6500t and like it much better then the Dell. The screen is so nice on the HP. Dell is just using cheap components these days.

My WSXGA+ screen came with a Samsung screen which was grainy. It was replaced today with another Samsung and its grainy.

I'm adopting the same policy as you n19ghtmare. I'm going to keep getting it replaced until the satisfaction policy runs out.

And you are definately right, once you put it next to a non-grainy screen it is really like night and day.

Yes I kid you not. A co-worker got the Vostro with me, and when I put mine next to his (he doesn't know didly squat about computers), even he noticed it RIGHT off the bat.

The whites are what gives it away. His whites were bright white, clear and my whites were dull and there was a huge difference between the two.

At first, I thought hey, i could live with it but when he got his vostro, and i did a comparison I knew right away that this isn't right.

I have a bright red ferrari pic for my background and you can easily see it then.

The technician that replaced my screen noticed it.

I called Dell straight after he left and requested a LG Phillips screen. They are investigating to see if they can get one of those sent out and then they'll get back to me.

I wish HP would offer us Canadians the same options as those in the US... :(
I've seen some of the HP's in Futureshop, and they are really really nice.

How do you check to see which screen you have? In my display properties it just says plug and play monitor.

My Vostro 1500 that I received today has the AUO WXGA Truelife screen, and it is flawless. In fact, one of the better screens I've seen on a laptop. So any issues must be limited to the higher res LCDs.

Ok. just got mine replaced by a tech today and DELL shipped him another AUO screen....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr same problem.

I think that it's only the AUO XGA+ that are effected by this grain problem. Co-worker got a AUO XGA and it has NO GRAIN. I just want to make it clear that it's the dang XGA +. I think im gonna return and just get WXGA :(

I think that is probably the case, because as I indicated above my AUO WXGA screen looks great. No, I don't have another laptop sitting right next to it, but I've looked at enough in the stores these last couple months to know what a good screen should look like. I've seen some screens with grain on other models, and this one has none.

No. That's not the case. SEC WSXGA+ displays have the same problem, and people with XGA+ are also having the problem. Depending on who manufactures the display affects the probability of getting grainyness.

These days I'm going to a friend of mine, who got the same exact Vostro 1500 specs as me. I see some little spots on mine, but in my opinion they are not that bad. When I compare both screens there will probably be a replacement - either hers or mine :) But it would be nice if both look the same, but I really doubt that.

Cyper, I'm interested in hearing your comparisons with your friends Vostro. In addition to grain, perhaps you could compare light bleeding and viewing angles?

I have a friend with an Insiron 1501 (WXGA 1280X800) that I may compare against my WXGA+.

I'm strongly leaning towards getting a Vostro 1500 with a WXGA TL and be done with higher resolution screens on Vostro's until Dell can get their act together.

I've just gotten off the phone with tech support and they're coming to pick up my grainy vostro tomorrow and the manager has assured me that the manufacturer will not be AUO. Only time will tell.
