I'm on my second Vostro. My first was a Vostro 1500 which arrived with a grainy AUO (WXGA+) screen. I sent it back and ordered a Vostro 1700 with WUXGA (1920x1200) screen.

This beauty arrived yesterday and I'm very happy with it. First, the screen is stunningly beautiful. No sign of grain, it has great clarity, vivid colors, and even illumination at various angles. When turning on there is only minimal light bleeding as the whole screens look to be a dark gray. This screen matches or exceeds the quality screens I saw at Best Buy and Circuit City on Sony and HP Laptops, except the Vostro has higher resolution. The actual screen is a LPLE400 (LG Philips). I don't know if I got lucky of this is what they are shipping with now.

The text and fonts on this screen are quite small, so I adjusted DPI to 120. This still give me plenty of real estate to have lots of windows open.

I ordered this with Vista Business. I was reluctant to go with Vista, but now I'm glad I have Vista because it is a better visual experience than Windows XP. I love the gadget sidebar that Vista provides. This sidebar contains "gadgets" that can be downloaded. Vista gave me some problems installing Apache and PHP, but got them worked out.

Nothing is perfect, so here are some pro's and con's:

    PROS
    Beautiful screen
Nice solid keyboard and overall build quality
Decent sounding speakers for a laptop
9 Cell battery should last 3+ hours
    Minimal bloatware

    CONS
    This is a big laptop
The touch pad seems jerky (Could be Vista?)
Should have got additional 6 cell battery for everyday use

Congrats on the machine. No law says you can't buy another battery.

Unfortunately, no law would guarantee any kind of assurance for their EDDs...

    I'm sure a battery doesn't have long EDDs :|
