    greetings

I got this E1705 off Ebay a year ago (Dec 2006 to be exact) I paid about $1050 for it FWIW. "Windows Media Center Edition" The seller had low feedback so I did the transction in person.

Anyway, the laptop was sold as new, and it was, but something wasn't really right about it as it did not come with a box, a manual or even Windows install CD. He said that to reinstall the OS, you have to reset the laptop and it will default to the original configuration, and that Dell doesn't offer Windows CDs anymore.

I used it for a while without issues but now am wondering if it's really true that new Dell laptops don't come with Windows install CDs?

My Dell Inspiron didn't come with a Windows OS CD. It wasn't inadvertently omitted by Dell. The documentation that came with the system stated it wasn't included. I guess Dell assumed it wasn't necessary because of the recovery partition.

My Inspiron is almost 3 years old though.

I guess that explains the low price. I think I will have to purchase XP separately, if I need it.

Wow, I think you got robbed on that laptop. I bought a Vostro 1400 through Dell and when I recieve my laptop 2 weeks ago I got a Driver disk and a Window XP Pro disk included.

But I do know that some new laptop don't comes with a disk anymore because it is partition on the harddrive for an easy restore. So you might want to look at you laptop harddrive.

There was a generation of older Inspirons (roughly three years ago) that did not include an OEM disk. I've got a similarly aged 1150 that did not come with one. All current Dell laptops (including the e1705) should include one by default though.

That is correct. There was a generation of inspirons that did not come with the reinstall discs by default. There was a 10 dollar cost for the "upgrade". However, if the system is under warranty, as others have suggested, just ask Dell to ship you a set of reinstall disks and they will do it for free.

    Good Luck!

It came with no paper work whatsoever. No restore CD. Not in a box either, but in these white styrofoam boards.

A year ago, it was a pretty good price
