The lcd needs replacing, all I have is a very very dim screen, but the system seems to work fine when I hook it up to an external monitor....Dell chat actually worked ok in diagnosing and arranging a repair.
This is my first laptop and I've been reading through this forum for guidance. Do you guys think this problem is indicative of more problems with the system, that just haven't popped up yet? Basically, I'm wondering if I should just return the thing and order a new one, or may this just be an isolated problem, and I shouldn't be worrying so much. Thanks ahead of time!

I have had my E1505 and I only had one problem and suprisingly enough I was able to work with the people who had bad english to be able to fix it in under 30 minutes. As of right now I am totally satisfied... except I wish I got the E1705 because I realise that I use my notebook more at home than traveling.

Dell has a mediocre realiability rating.. or so consumer reports say. Though - you will get half as much hardware with Toshiba, but more realiability. I almost got a Toshiba or a Sony because according to Consumer Reports they had very good reliability reviews.

    I hope this helps some,
    Toku

i hope when you say "dim" you don't mean dim the way that the screen dims on battery. is it a problem with the lcd or was it on the lowest brightness setting?

Yea, I had a hard time describing it through chat, its almost as if theres an image on the screen, but theres no light being shined to "light it up" sort of. I tried the keyboard FN combo to up the brightness and the tech took me through increasing the brightness through the setup screen(it works fine hooked to an external monitor), but no difference on the laptop screen.

Hmm, it sounds like the backlight is not receiving powered. If you want - which this is totally up to you - you can take apart your display, and you'll see a plug that fits on the backside (lower part) of your screen. This gives power from your laptop to your LCD.

The reason I suggest that is because I had that happen once when I was changing the display out. I could see the Dell logo but it was very very faint, so I took apart my display and realize that I didn't have part of the wiring plugged in tight enough.

This really isn't a common problem, and was probably just something that was overlooked when your laptop was being put together.
