Greets. I got my e1705 just a few days ago. At this point, as I've read from various posts around this forum, I ought to uninstall trialware or re-format this lappy's HD. However I am unsure as to which path to go with given the disagreements between users here.

Also, what should be my first step after unpacking & powering on the machine (sorry for the silly question)?

If you have the OS reinstallation cd go for the format.

The best thing you can do to take advantage of the speed of your new notebook is to reformat it. Do you have the OS disks? You can request them from Dell if you don't have them. Dell installs tons of junk on the machine. What graphics card do you have in your E1705?

No... The OS reinstall disk you get from Dell will NOT reinstall any of the trialware.... Just the OS.

For gd-student.... Be aware that if it is a MCE reinstall disk there will be step in the process that following a reboot you'll get a WARNING!!! screen. This Dell screen appears during the installation of Windows XP MCE SP2 updates. Do NOT interrupt this step.

Say I do, won't I have to spend hours to just hunt down all the drivers and re-install the OS as well?

I've heard that doing a reformat is a waste especially since Dell has the PC optimally configured from the factory. Uninstalling trialware and cleaning registry would suffice, as I hear. What can the moderators say about this?

If you have post signatures enabled, you'll see mine saying Go 7800.
