it seems to be a step up on Inspiron, and inferior to XPS only in graphics card. So it isn't really a gamers laptop, which is what in my eyes XPS is trying to be.
Perfect for most people by the look of it though, certainly the most compelling reason to buy Dell I've seen in a long time.

It definitely looks to stepping right into the spot occupied by the M1530. Yeah, it doesn't quite have the gaming card, but really how many serious gamers are choosing the M1530 anyway? If you're really into gaming, there are better choices.
The market for the Studio line is coming right off the XPS line. Which leaves the still unanswered question...what's going to happen the the XPS? Serious upgrade? Or trash heap? -
Be patient. XPS will be getting its fill once Montevina hits. Dell is not going to release a new design just for the sake of better sales.
Sales are already strong with the M1530 and this Inspiron Studio line was released to help boost already weak Inspiron Sales. There will be no problem now for Dell to continue on throughout all of summer. Once Montevina hits, XPS should get a redesign whereas the Studio gets a slight refresh internally, the XPS will be in the definite lead.
Even now the M1530 still is in the lead compared with the Studio. Looking at it compared with the M1530, it does look slightly thicker and optionwise it doesnt offer any 7200RPM drives. I'd say M1530 still has an edge, though price-wise it is kind of high up there, but then again the same is for all the other XPS lines, so its not a big deal.
One things virtually certain, there will be no 25% off discounts for the M1530 anytime soon, or maybe even at all as Dell wants their Studio line to sell. -
well said forte. i can't wait till september when the xps m1535 i think will come out.

kinda sucks that the studios use lesser graphics cuz i want a powerful studio but its an oxymoron right now. i like all fo the new features but no nice GPU. atleast an 8600m gt or higher would have been nice and a 3650 in a 17incher. come on dell, u know u can do better than that.
-
I dunno Forte. If I had to bet cold hard cash on it, I'd bet that the XPS line will in fact get an update and remain. But on the other hand I really could see it getting cut. You've got the base Inspiron as the budget choice, you've got the Insprion Studio as the higher end multimedia choice, and you've got Alienware for the gamers. What's the point of the XPS line, other than it's already an established brand? Think of it like this...if the XPS didn't already exist and Dell had the Inspiron-->Studio-->Alienware trio, would there be a need to add a new line in there? For what purpose?
Obviosuly I don't know anything, and like I said if I was betting I'd bet that the XPS will remain in some way. But I don't think it's necessarily a given at this point. I guess it depends on how much Dell wants to push people to Alienware. -
How does the 256MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 3650 in the Studio 17 compare to nvidia 8600m gt?
-
the only thing that would save their sales will be a better GPU which now dell destroyed any hope of that..its kinda disappointing to see this on a 2008 model. what are they thinking? losing my loyalty

radeon 3450 - geforce 8400
radeon 3650 - geforce 8600
or close to it -
Dell won't get rid of their XPS line. It's well known and makes no marketing sense. Besides, talking to the people at ideastorm.com, they can give you the official answer.

Why is it that the Studio 15 has a 200GB 7200rpm option but the 17 doesn't?
-
On the Australian Dell website they offer the Studio 17 with backlit keyboards and the image of the machine shows what appears to be an eSata port.
