So I assume that means that we're going to be able to take out 512MB of it and put in another 1GB stick?

    yes thats what it means.

But, if you think for 2 minutes, you customize the notebook with a 1gb stick instead (cheaper) and you add another 1gb stick later-on and you are not stuck with a pointless 512mb stick of RAM.

Except it's 1GB Dual Channel, which means there's 2 512MB sticks. Maybe you should think for 2 minutes.

i have two pointless 512mb sticks. But that's cause it was the cheapest option from Dell.
