Interesting. The question is, is this gonna actually happen. I don't really see the point in Dell doing this personally. Had they done it a year or two ago, it could have been huge for their sales since Intel has been laggin behind in the desktop market terribly for a while with the P4. However, now with Intel about to release the Core 2 Duo for the desktop (conroe) and the new Merom (is that gonna be called Core 2 Duo as well?) for notebooks, it's looking like they are going to be back on top of the world as far as processors. I can see that it would be smart to have some diversity, but I'm worried that this will hurt their relationship with Intel, and cause the prices for Intel-based machines to go up since they may not have such a great deal with them for the CPUs.

just to clarify, intel is calling it's entire line of Core 2 Duo (merom and conroe) by that name, core 2 duo, so as to unify the idea. the only other name will be the core 2 duo extreme for the desktop.

They will still be Intel's largest customer.

I'm sure they will be; but I still can't imagine that their relationship will stay exactly the same.
