Hi, I was just curious as to if anyone knew roughly when Dell usually introduces new processors or graphics cards, etc. Or better yet, have any actual release dates? Only reason I ask is because I am hoping the specs I have my eye on will go down in price once something new comes out. I really want to get a "multimedia powerhouse" as they call it in a 1720.

if you're like me...once the new stuff comes out, you'll no longer want the older processors/graphic cards. it wouldn't be a "powerhouse" anymore. ~_~
that's especially the case if the prices are the same

Well, the new XPS 1730 will have the extreme edition mobile processor, so I guess that's technically an upgrade. However, I wouldn't hold out for the new items you're looking for. The graphics card is currently one of the best ones out, and you'll only find a better one in the upcoming 1730, where they will use an 8700m gt instead of the 8600m gt. They are basically the same card, just different clock speeds.

As with all technology, bigger and better will always be just around the corner. However, as the trend seems to be with dell, they won't offer the "worse" stuff at reduced prices, they'll just drop those options all together and replace them with newer ones.

Just order the laptop you want, and be okay with the fact that it WILL get outdated. It doesn't matter if you buy it tomorrow or next week or next year, something better will always come out.

I also feel that getting the absolute top of the line is a waste of money. Rather than getting a $2000 laptop today that needs to last for at least 3-4 years, I'd rather get an $800 one now that is still very good, and then get a new $800 one in two years that will blow away the $2000 one anyway.

    My 2 cents.

i deffinatly am with you on this. spend 800 every couple years on a pretty decent laptop. its the best way to spend money on computers these days. You can sell that 2 year old laptop for 400 and it only costs you 200 a year for a laptop :)

I've spent a little over $800 on my 700m 3 years ago, and this time around I splashed a little more on the flashier 1330 'cause I couldn't stand anything else in Dell line-up :) I'm not sorry about this decision, just hope 1330 will hold up as well as 700m did :D

my 700m i got in feb of 05 was a touch under $1000. my 1420 as can be seen from my signature, was much less than that.

    Next processor releases are:

Q1 2008 Penryn processors for notebooks (45nm, uses 35w of power like current processors, FSB of 800MHz)

Q2 2008 Montevina platform (45nm processors that use 25w of power, increased FSB to 1066MHz)

Q3 2008 Nehalem platform (replaces Core 2 Duo, 45nm processors, new Intel X3600 graphics), most likely when Nvidia will release 9XXX series graphics cards.
