    Some notes:

    More info about latchless design.

Bottom seems to be made of magnesium alloy too (like the Latitude).

    Spill-resist keyboard like the Latitude.

    Good quality speaker, yeah!

6 cells - 2.5hrs mostly idle but WIFI on, screen at medium brightness.

Awesome, thanks for the link. Speaker quality wasn't something other reviews have touched on, but then again, neither was the discussion about the "travel weight" (6.6lbs :().

could that "latchless" design be magnets....thats what it sounds like in the review

HP's and Macbooks also use the magnet latches if im not mistaken

I am a bit disappointed about the battery life, hopefully it is due to the nVidia. Ordered mine with x3100, I don't play game :)

First review with detail info about the material used for the bottomand the latchless design.

I think the reviewer comment on the design is mostly by its look. The 1420 is a drastic re-design from the 1405. The I/O layout is a lot more user-friendly, what left at the back of the notebook are least frequent use telephone and NIC ports. The Mediadirect buttons are logically grouped by the volume section and control section and covered by the lid. The front headphone port allow the use of short length wire headphone. Chasis is now made with Magnesium alloy to reduce flex, squeak. The only downsides are Dell should really make the IR remote a standard component, and thinner chasis.

I ordered the discrete NVIDIA graphics not because I am a big gamer... instead, I ordered them so that if I was watching a movie it wouldn't draw on a ton of shared RAM. Thus, the decision was more driven by a desire to multitask in a media rich environment.

The keyboard in 1420 is not spill proof. Only the vostros come with one I guess.

This review specifically says that the key area is sealed.

If you read the specs on the dell website, dimensions, weight, etc are all EXACTLY the same with the Vostro and Inspiron. They just have it advertised with those feature to be more "appealing" I think, but no one can be sure till someone tests an inspiron? >.> not sure who would though.. that would be... really silly.

I just went to the only actual Dell Store in a mall by Dallas while visiting my girl friend. They had a model out of every color of every 1420. But about your "latch" question. It seems to just be stiff. When you open it it takes some effort, and when you close it, it seems to snap shut. It has no magnets though. And the bottom seemed to be plastic by the way, not magnesium alloy.
